New Delhi, March 13: In cinema, lead actors are crucial, but co-actors hold equal importance. They add depth to films, strengthen narratives, and leave a lasting impression on audiences.

One such remarkable co-actor was Shafi Inamdar. He portrayed every character with honesty, sensitivity, and skill. Whether in theater, film, or television, Shafi consistently captivated viewers with his performances. The authenticity and depth in his roles made him a beloved figure among audiences.

March 13 marks the death anniversary of the renowned character actor Shafi Inamdar. A devoted fan of Dilip Kumar, Shafi cherished the opportunity to work alongside him in the film “Izzatdar.” His acting was marked by sincerity and depth, allowing audiences to forget their troubles. From theater to film and television, he left an indelible mark across all mediums. Memories of his characters continue to resonate in the hearts of many.

Shafi Inamdar was born on October 23, 1945, in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. He completed his education at KC College in Mumbai. His passion for acting began in childhood, leading him to participate actively in school and college plays. This early involvement laid a strong foundation for his acting career. He started under the guidance of renowned Gujarati theater figure Praveen Joshi. Later, he met Balraj Sahni and joined the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).

Shafi believed that his acting and direction truly flourished when he connected with Balraj Sahni. In the 1970s, he joined Prithvi Theatres, producing and directing several major plays. After Prithviraj Kapoor, his son Shashi Kapoor took over the theater. Shashi was so impressed with Shafi’s acting that he cast him in his film “Vijeta.” Directed by Govind Nihalani, the film was released in 1982, and during that period, Shafi also played a significant role in “Ardh Satya,” which was well-received by audiences.

For Shafi, acting was his life. He did not differentiate between theater, film, or television. In 1984, his television series “Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi” became a massive hit, co-starring Swaroop Sampat. Throughout the 1980s, he appeared in several films by B.R. Chopra, which became favorites among the public.

In 1995, Shafi transitioned to directing, with his first film “Hum Dono,” featuring Nana Patekar and Rishi Kapoor in lead roles. He was married to Bhakti Baruve, a Maharashtrian actress and newsreader for Doordarshan.

Tragically, Shafi passed away in 1996 from a heart attack while watching the live broadcast of the India vs. Sri Lanka World Cup semi-final match at home. He had a deep love for cricket, both watching and playing. During the match, he suddenly became unwell, suffering a heart attack. Five years after his death, in 2001, his wife Bhakti also tragically lost her life in a car accident.
