Guwahati: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered another jolt on Friday as its Assam chief, Abhijit Majumdar, resigned from the party, accusing it of functioning only for the Muslim community in both Assam and West Bengal.

His exit adds to the growing wave of resignations following the party's crushing defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Majumdar sent his resignation letter to TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee via email, alleging that the party's image in Assam had increasingly become that of "an organisation working solely for Muslims." He claimed the same approach was evident in West Bengal, making it impossible for him to continue.

His departure underscores the unrest brewing within the TMC, which has seen a string of high-profile exits and internal disagreements since its electoral setback. Majumdar's resignation is expected to further weaken the party's already fragile organisational base in Assam, where it has struggled to gain traction.
