Uber partners with Adani Group to set up data centre in India

Global ride-hailing major Uber is set to establish its first data centre in India in partnership with the Adani Group, the company's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said on Wednesday.

The new facility is expected to be operational later this year.

Taking to social media platform X, the Uber CEO wrote, "Great to meet @gautam_adani in Ahmedabad this morning and build on our existing partnership with the Adani group.

"As India fast emerges as a leading innovation hub for @Uber, we are setting up our first data centre in the country with the Adani Group to test and deploy our tech. Ready later this year, this investment will help us build at scale - from India, for the world."

The quantum and value of the investment were not immediately disclosed.

Data centres have emerged as key investment destinations for the global technology companies given the consumption of data in the country. Recently, Google formally had an opening ceremony of its data centre or AI hub in Visakhapatnam with a planned investment of $15 billion over the next five years which will be gigawatt scale.

Similarly, Microsoft also announced a $17.5 billion investment in India from 2026 to 2029 and this will also include investments into data centres. The company has already announced that it will expand its three existing operational data centre regions in Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.

Amazon has also announced the expansion of its data centre in India with an investment of $7 billion. Besides these three large global technology companies there have also been others who are setting up their data centres in India.

A Quess Corp report said the India data centre market is projected to grow from $5.55 billion in 2025 to $13.11 billion by 2034, a 136% expansion sustained by a 10% compound annual growth rate.

The sector currently employs between 86,000 and 90,000 professionals across more than 50 providers, spanning IT operations, network engineering, cloud operations, cybersecurity, and facilities management.
