Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya or Mahamana Malaviya was born on December 25, 1861 in Allahabad, in a family of six brothers and two sisters. Malaviya is most remembered as the founder of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) at Varanasi in 1916, which was created under the B.H.U. Act, 1915. The largest residential university in Asia and one of the largest in the world, having over 35,000 students across arts, sciences, engineering, medical, agriculture, performing arts, law and technology. Malaviya was Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1919–1938. Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya saved ‘Hindustan Times’ when the newspaper was facing a downfall and was about to shut down in the 1930s. The ‘Hindi’ version of the newspaper, which isnow owned by the Birla family, was launched thanks to his efforts. Malaviya even figures on a 5-rupee Indian coin. Former Congress party president and freedom fighter Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya, who was notable for his role in the Indian independence movement and his espousal of Hindu nationalism, was on Wednesday chosen to be awarded the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna (posthumously) along with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.The Legendary Freedom Fighter and Educationist; Pt.
