"Our media is sold out, lost its voice": Rahul Gandhi on Jharkhand mass sedition cases

New Delhi: On Tuesday Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised the issue of sedition charges against tribals in Jharkhand where more than 10,000 tribals been charged with sedition in only one district of the state.

'That any Government could slam the draconian 'sedition' law on 10,000 Adivasis, fighting against state oppression, should have shocked the conscience of our country and raised a media being biased. But it hasn't,' Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Gandhi also slammed the media for not raising it properly. 'Our media is 'sold out' may have lost its voice; as citizens can we afford to?'.

Around 19 FIRs registered in Khunti district, some report describes a police crackdown against an Adivasi movement called Pathalgadi

The report also says over 11,000 people were booked for 'a host of offenses related to disturbing public order', including under IPC Section 124A, which deals with sedition. Those facing sedition charges 'constitute two percent of Khunti's population,'.

'The actual number of sedition accused in the district could, in fact, be higher since it is widely believed that there are more than just 19 FIRs against Pathalgadi supporters.'

The case is related to the Pathalgadi movement in Jharkhand's Khunti district where engraved stones were installed in villages in 2017 granting special autonomy to tribal areas under the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution.

According to media reports, the local police filed cases and leveled sedition charges against 10,000 tribals. Jharkhand will go to polls from November 30 in five phases.
