The Jallianwala Bagh Chair, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar on the initiative of the Vice- Chancellor started the Jallianwala Bagh Lecture Series.

The fifth lecture in the series was held on March 2, 2026. The distinguished speaker was Prof Kamlesh Mohan, Professor Emiretus, Department of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

She spoke on the topic "The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre : The other ways of Seeing History". The Lecture started with an introduction by Professor Amandeep Bal, Chairperson of the Jallianwala Chair. She said the purpose of organizing these lectures is not merely to raise awareness about what transpired on that day and its consequences, but also to critically examine the many facets of imperialism.

Prof. Kamlesh Mohan in her lecture said that we need to look at British archives from different parameters. The British authorities relied on photographic evidence to justify both the Amritsar Massacre and the actions of General Dyer, presenting these images as proof that the violence was a necessary response to the disturbances of 10 April.

She argued that, as a consequence, their collective memory of the massacre differs significantly from what we regard as our own shared memory of the event. She further argued that the episode not only intensified the national movement but also awakened political consciousness among previously "muted" sections of the society.

In particular, she highlighted the role of women, showing how the massacre drew them into the public sphere. Beyond elite figures, many semi-literate women turned to poetry and other expressive forms to articulate their anguish. She spoke at length about Sarla Devi Chaudhurani and the role of Mahatma Gandhi in facilitating the entry of women into public life.
