Haryana has intensified efforts to rejuvenate the Yamuna by launching a comprehensive action plan. The plan includes 18 new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) with a total capacity of 621 MLD, technology upgrades for six existing STPs, 12 Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) projects for industrial clusters, Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) clusters in all 33 Urban Local Bodies, six biogas plants for scientific dairy waste processing, and restoration of all identified ponds along the Yamuna corridor.
Chief Secretary Sh. Anurag Rastogi reviewed the implementation roadmap and directed all departments to ensure timely execution of projects to strengthen wastewater treatment, pollution control, and ecological restoration in the Yamuna basin.
During the review, the Chief Secretary assessed progress on the Yamuna Action Plan, which aims to expand treatment infrastructure, address gaps in sewage and industrial effluent management, improve solid waste processing, and protect water bodies in the river catchment. He emphasised the importance of close interdepartmental coordination to ensure timely project completion and effective implementation.
Chairman, Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Sh. Vinay Pratap Singh informed that technology upgrades for six existing STPs, with a combined capacity of 284 MLD, are underway. Additionally, 18 new STPs with a capacity of 621 MLD and an estimated cost of ₹932.18 crore are proposed or under construction to significantly enhance sewage treatment in the Yamuna catchment.
To strengthen industrial pollution control, the State has proposed 12 CETP projects with a combined capacity of 187.25 MLD. These projects will address the remaining gap in industrial effluent treatment and serve 6,417 industries in the Yamuna catchment area.
The review also addressed the progress of proposed and under-construction STPs in Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Panipat, and Bahadurgarh, as well as the status of CETP projects at various locations. Departments were instructed to expedite tendering, approvals, and construction to ensure the additional treatment capacity becomes operational within the prescribed timelines.
As part of the integrated waste management strategy, ISWM clusters are planned across all 33 Urban Local Bodies in the Yamuna catchment to address the municipal solid waste processing gap. Additionally, six biogas plants with a combined capacity of 1,250 tonnes per day have been proposed to process dairy waste scientifically and promote sustainable waste management.
The action plan also emphasises ecological restoration. 61 isolated ponds and water bodies have been identified along the Yamuna corridor. Of these, 11 have been restored, while the remaining are targeted for rejuvenation within one year through embankment construction, prevention of contaminated inflows, and other restoration measures.
Haryana currently has 86 operational STPs, 17 operational CETPs, a well-established biomedical waste treatment system, authorised hazardous waste disposal facilities, and a robust e-waste recycling network. The ongoing infrastructure expansion is expected to further strengthen the State's pollution management capacity and support long-term conservation of the Yamuna.
Commissioner and Secretary, Urban Local Bodies, Sh. Ashok Kumar Meena, Managing Director, Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation, Sh. Sushil Sarwan, and other senior officers were present in the meeting.
