Padma Shri Jitender Singh Shunty, Member of the Punjab State and Chandigarh Human Rights Commission (PSHRC), today organised an open hearing camp at Bhawanigarh to promote awareness about human rights and to address public grievances.
Officers from various departments also participated in the camp, heard the grievances of the public, and issued necessary directions for their prompt redressal.
Addressing the gathering, Padma Shri Jitender Singh Shunty said that the primary objective of the Human Rights Commission is to protect the human rights of citizens, spread awareness, and ensure timely justice for victims. He said that the Commission is organising open hearing camps at the district and sub-divisional levels to make its services more accessible and to facilitate the prompt disposal of public grievances.
He informed that Punjab has become the first Human Rights Commission in the country to constitute core groups in all districts for the protection and promotion of human rights. He further stated that any person can submit a complaint regarding a human rights violation from the comfort of their home through the Commission's WhatsApp number 9855475547.
Padma Shri Shunty further said that, following the recommendations of the Commission, the Punjab Government has ensured that no private hospital can detain a patient or a deceased person's body due to the non-payment of hospital bills. He described this as a significant step towards safeguarding the human rights of patients and their families.
He informed that complaints and suggestions related to healthcare services, education, municipal services, stray animals, ambulance facilities, and other public issues were received during the open hearing camp. Cases that could be resolved immediately were addressed on the spot by issuing directions to the concerned officers, while serious matters will be taken up by the Commission in accordance with the prescribed procedure.
He further said that the Commission is continuously working to strengthen accountability and transparency in public institutions and is giving due importance to public feedback and suggestions. He appealed to the people to approach the Commission without hesitation in cases involving violations of human rights. On the occasion, volunteers also organised an awareness rally against drug abuse under the "Yudh Nashean Virudh" (War Against Drugs) campaign.

S. Sahni, along with officers from various departments.
