São Paulo [Brazil], October 2 : Brazil’s ethanol sector is entering a new phase as emerging technologies in agriculture, aviation and maritime transport are expected to drive demand for the biofuel beyond conventional sugarcane-powered vehicles, according to Henrique Berbert de Amorim Neto, president of the Local Productive Arrangement for Alcohol (APLA).

<nh-chunk-delimit />Speaking to Brasil 247 during the Global Agribusiness Forum (GAFFFF) in São Paulo, Amorim said agricultural machinery powered by ethanol could become a major source of new demand. He noted that manufacturers are developing ethanol-powered tractors and sugarcane harvesters, while other technologies are exploring flex-fuel systems capable of incorporating ethanol into diesel engines.Amorim said these developments are converging around the use of ethanol to reduce carbon emissions. He also dismissed concerns that higher ethanol blends in gasoline could damage vehicle engines, calling such claims a fallacy.According to him, Brazil’s experience with ethanol-powered vehicles dates back to 1975, while studies by companies and universities have supported increased blending, as per reports by Brasil 247.He said ethanol is also gaining potential applications in aviation and maritime transport. APLA is working with ApexBrasil to promote Brazilian sugar, ethanol and energy technologies in international markets, including countries with existing or potential sugarcane and corn production.Amorim pointed to growing opportunities in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and marine bunker fuel.He said ethanol-based solutions could contribute to decarbonising maritime transport, while demand from the aviation sector could require a substantial expansion of ethanol production.Brazil’s production capacity, he said, will need to grow significantly to meet emerging demand. Corn ethanol is currently emerging as the main frontier for this expansion.Amorim said corn-based production has grown rapidly and could account for nearly 30 per cent of Brazil’s ethanol output this year, compared with about 25 per cent last year, as reported by Brasil 247.The shift highlights the diversification of Brazil’s ethanol industry, which has expanded considerably since the launch of the Proálcool programme in 1975, with ethanol production now extending beyond its traditional dependence on sugarcane.Disclaimer: This post has been auto-published from an agency feed without any modifications to the text and has not been reviewed by an editor

Washington, DC [US], October 2 : The United States military has positioned two extra Patriot missile batteries in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, reinforcing security around critical petroleum and natural gas installations as Washington braces for potential large-scale military engagements involving Iran.

<nh-chunk-delimit />According to an Axios report, which referenced a pair of American officials and a regional insider, the troop movements follow worries expressed by Saudi and Qatari authorities that Tehran might target their energy assets if Washington restarts major offensives against Iran. One Patriot unit was dispatched to Saudi Arabia to safeguard a major oil installation, whereas a second was stationed in Qatar to protect a primary gas facility, Axios noted. The manoeuvre underscores the vulnerabilities facing Gulf energy networks should the US-Iran war intensify once more.Earlier in August, when US President Donald Trump contemplated a significant offensive involving strikes on Iranian energy assets, the heads of Saudi Arabia and Qatar reportedly petitioned him against the strategy over fears of retaliatory Iranian strikes targeting their petroleum and gas infrastructure, as detailed by Axios.Any substantial strike against petroleum or gas sites across the area risks destabilising global energy provisions and increasing strain on international markets, specifically if hostilities hinder maritime transit through vital regional shipping lanes. The supplemental Patriot deployments also coincide with mounting demands on American air defence stockpiles. Patriot batteries, and most notably their interceptor missiles, have experienced heightened demand since the outbreak of the war with Iran.Data from an assessment by the Center for Strategic and International Studies indicated that US Patriot interceptor reserves had dropped below 1,000 units following heavy utilisation throughout the conflict with Iran.Meanwhile, the Pentagon is broadening its force posture across the Middle East, despatching extra naval vessels, combat jets, and personnel to the theatre. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, transporting thousands of US Marines, has similarly arrived in the area, bolstering Washington’s expanding military footprint in the Middle East. The Patriot air and missile defence platform functions as a land-based apparatus utilised by American and partner armed forces to shield personnel and vital facilities from airborne hazards. The US Army states that the Patriot can counter aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles, with its operational battery centring on a radar network, an engagement control station, and missile launchers. The advanced PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptor employs hit-to-kill mechanics, neutralising incoming targets via direct collision. It utilises a dual-pulse solid propellant rocket motor that supplies extended range, higher altitude capabilities, and superior agility compared to preceding PAC-3 iterations.A standard Patriot battery configuration incorporates a multifunction radar, an engagement control station, and launcher platforms. Depending on the specific setup, a single launcher is capable of housing up to 12 PAC-3 MSE interceptors.Disclaimer: This post has been auto-published from an agency feed without any modifications to the text and has not been reviewed by an editor

New Delhi [India], October 2 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to India’s brave pilot Captain Smit Machchaar whose heroics in thwarting off an attack by his co-pilot saved 180 lives on the flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

<nh-chunk-delimit />Captain Machchhar gave details of his experience to the Prime Minister and spoke of what gave him courage during the incident. The PM applauded his bravery and wished him a quick recovery.According to India's envoy to the UAE Dipak Mittal, Captain Smit Machchhar is in a stable condition and is recovering well in a UAE hospital. Deepak Mittal, who met the injured pilot and his family in a hospital here, said Smit Machchhar’s morale is high and he was “smiling and also laughing”.Speaking to Prasar Bharati following his visit to the hospital, the Ambassador said that the captain is receiving good treatment and the Indian Embassy is in constant touch with the officials."I just met him along with his family here, in the hospital, in UAE, and he's doing well. I was very relieved to see, and very reassured, that he's doing well, he's quite stable. He was talking, he was chatting, a bit of discomfort, but I think he's under good medical care here in UAE," Dr. Mittal told Prasar Bharati.Describing Captain Machchhar as a "brave son of India," the envoy commended his courageous response during the mid-air emergency, noting that his actions saved hundreds of lives and prevented a major catastrophe.Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi lauded Captain Machchhar for his courage and presence of mind during the mid-air cockpit attack, saying the pilot’s valour has made the entire country proud and helped avert a major tragedy.PM Modi recalled the incident and praised Machchhar for displaying courage despite being seriously injured.“The incident that occurred, Captain Smit of India demonstrated remarkable patience, presence of mind, and courage; indeed, as the Prime Minister of Israel stated today, an Indian prevented a 9/11-style tragedy. For every citizen of our country, Smit's valour fills us with immense pride,” PM Modi said. The Prime Minister said he had spoken to Machchhar’s family and enquired about his health.“I had a conversation with his father Bhupendrabhai, his mother Gitaben, and his wife Sonalben. His medical treatment is currently ongoing, and today the entire world feels proud of him,” he said.Meanwhile, new footage released by Israel's Channel 12 showed the chaos aboard flydubai flight after pilot Capt Smit Machchhar and other passengers overcame an attempt by the co-pilot to crash the plane flying to Tel Aviv from Dubai. In a video clip shared by Channel 12 news, which is filmed from a seat near the cockpit, people are heard shouting, with one person saying “he tried to crash the plane,” referring to the copilot who stabbed Capt Machchhar. Others yell “take him out” in the direction of the cockpit and ask people in the cabin to “sit down.”Calls for a doctor can then be heard and an Israeli dentist identified as Dr. Shota Musayev, rushes to the front of the plane to provide medical treatment. Another man asks whether there is an additional pilot on the flight, to which someone responds affirmatively. The footage then shows a bloodied Captain Smit Machchhar lying on the ground outside the cockpit, whose door he earlier managed to click open and, in doing so, helped save the lives of all 180 people on the plane.Machchhar tells the other passenger "the copilot hit me so many times” and that he can move his injured hand but no longer squeeze it shut. The video resumes after the plane made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, as medics attend to Machchhar. The other passengers tell the ground staff that the co-pilot “is a terrorist” as police teams arrive at the plane. The video ends with Capt Machchhar telling medics about his wounded hand. The new footage was released amid continued investigations into the copilot.Earlier, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the co-pilot who attacked Captain Smit Machchhar had undergone radical Islamist indoctrination.Speaking to Fox News, the Israeli PM said that the Pilot was currently being interrogated. Israeli investigators have joined the interrogation."The attacker, the co-pilot who attacked the captain, is now being interrogated. What we know so far is that he underwent Islamist radical indoctrination," the Israeli Prime Minister said.Disclaimer: This post has been auto-published from an agency feed without any modifications to the text and has not been reviewed by an editor

Washington, DC [US], October 2 : US President Donald Trump credited his tariff policies with returning manufacturing employment and industrial plants to the country, asserting that shielding domestic markets from foreign competitors is driving a revival in American manufacturing.

<nh-chunk-delimit />Speaking in Texas, Trump cited the expansion of truck manufacturing as proof that his trade measures are yielding results.“We have more factories being built, like, you’re doing so well, they're doing well, better than anybody in the history of our country. All over the country, they're building factories, plants, manufacturing’s coming back,” Trump stated. The US President explained that import duties have successfully prevented foreign manufacturers from dumping merchandise into the American market while depriving local labourers of livelihoods.“They'd drop their products here; they’d walk away with the money, and you’d walk away with no jobs. But not with me and we changed it,” he noted.Furthermore, Trump stated that national exports have attained historic highs, asserting that the trade deficit with China has dropped significantly.“Thanks to our strong tariff policy, this year, American exports have surged to the highest level in history, in the history of our country,” Trump remarked.“Our trade deficit with China has plummeted to the lowest level that we've had in 44 years,” he added.Trump also mentioned that industrial earnings have increased and that the nation has generated 60,000 new production jobs over the course of the year.“And after years of decline, this year, the United States has added 60,000 new manufacturing jobs and heavy truck manufacturing is almost up by about, what, 31 per cent or something,” he said.“And heavy truck shipments have hit an all-time high, the highest in the history of our country under the Trump administration.”“American trucking is back,” Trump declared.Peterbilt events manager Sarah Renshaw informed Trump that his import taxes enabled the enterprise to boost output and expand its workforce.“Mr. President, because of your tariffs, we have been able to hire increase production and hire 1,000 employees,” Renshaw stated.Additionally, Trump connected the sector's performance to his government's choice to rescind environmental mandates impacting heavy commercial vehicles. He highlighted a specific nitrogen oxide standard, noting that cancelling the requirement will lower the expenses associated with manufacturing trucks.“This action alone will cut an estimated $6,000 from the cost of each truck built and it'll be a better truck,” Trump stated.Trump has established import tariffs as a primary pillar of his commercial and economic agenda, maintaining that levies on foreign goods safeguard local output and incentivise businesses to operate domestically. His administration has similarly deployed targeted duties to protect sectors deemed vital to national and economic security.Disclaimer: This post has been auto-published from an agency feed without any modifications to the text and has not been reviewed by an editor

Washington, DC [US], October 2 : US President Donald Trump stated that the war with Iran would conclude “very quickly” and forecast a sharp decline in oil prices once the hostilities ceased, depicting Tehran as heavily degraded both economically and militarily.

<nh-chunk-delimit />Speaking to journalists on reaching Texas and subsequently during a visit to a Peterbilt Motors manufacturing facility in Denton, Trump remarked that Iran faced a decisive choice regarding how the war would resolve.“Iran will very soon be ending one way or the other,” Trump told reporters. “It’ll either just say, look, they have 301 per cent inflation. They have no money, they have no currency. Their military has been defeated, their navy is gone, their air force is gone, everything's gone.”“And, one way or the other, it’s going to end very quickly. And when that ends, oil prices are going to drop like a rock,” he stated.Trump added that Washington might contemplate requesting the release of diesel reserves held by a European nation to help mitigate costs, though he refrained from naming the specific country.“Well, we may do that. They have some diesel, but the prices are coming down. All prices are coming down,” he noted. While admitting that crude costs remained elevated, Trump contended they stayed lower than the levels recorded during the tenure of former President Joe Biden.“The one thing we have is oil is a little high, but oil is much lower than it was for Biden,” he said. “And we did something that Biden didn't do. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.”Addressing the audience later at the Peterbilt site, Trump repeatedly referenced Tehran and energy markets, asserting that the US had sustained petroleum transit despite the war and Iranian constraints near the Strait of Hormuz.“And when that happens, when that ends, which will be very soon, one way or the other, it’s going to end, either they’ll do something very proper and smart or they won’t be around very long,” Trump said.“So one way or the other, it’s going to be over. And when it’s over, oil is going to go like that. In the meantime, prices have come way down, oil prices,” he added.Furthermore, Trump noted he could not verify Tehran's participation in what a journalist termed an unsuccessful terror plot linked to RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom.“I can't say that with confirmation, but it’s looking like that,” Trump stated when questioned about potential Iranian links.Alongside his statements concerning Iran, the US President delivered a broader economic assessment during his Texas visit, asserting that his administration had failed to secure adequate recognition for national economic performance.“We have great numbers we're doing a great job of management,” Trump stated, highlighting equity markets, pension funds, and capital deployment into new industrial plants while arguing that his government needed to articulate its financial track record with greater efficiency.“So I say we’ve done a bad public relations job, but a great management job and that’s more important,” he remarked.Preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability remains a cornerstone of US policy. The White House has previously outlined that the goals of Operation Epic Fury involve dismantling Tehran's missile infrastructure and manufacturing output, neutralising its naval forces, and stopping it from acquiring atomic weapons.Disclaimer: This post has been auto-published from an agency feed without any modifications to the text and has not been reviewed by an editor

Washington, DC [US], October 2 : US Vice President JD Vance has branded the H-1B visa programme as “completely broken”, indicating he would back its total abolition on the grounds that corporations exploit the framework to substitute American personnel with cheaper international staff.

<nh-chunk-delimit />Sharing his stance via a video on the social media platform X, Vance asserted that the system has been “totally taken advantage of” across technology firms, accounting practices and various other sectors. He drew a distinct line between recruiting elite international talent and utilising H-1B permits merely to cut labour expenditures.“If you’re going to bring in an accountant making $45,000 a year to replace an accountant who is an American making $60,000 a year, that’s not you using the programme to bring in a genius,” Vance said. “That’s you destroying American jobs and defrauding the American people,” he said.Furthermore, Vance defended the White House's controversial USD 100,000 levy applied to certain H-1B petitions. This financial requirement originated in September 2025, targeting applicable submissions for personnel located overseas. The administration subsequently prolonged the policy in September 2026, extending its duration through September 21, 2027, subject to narrow carve-outs encompassing situations deemed vital to national interests.According to Vance, the executive branch regards this charge as a deterrent to stop businesses from leveraging H-1B permits simply to acquire low-cost labour.“If you’re just trying to replace an American accountant with a cheaper foreign accountant, then you’re not going to pay $100,000,” he said.Officials maintain that the policy aims to realign recruitment towards positions demanding higher skill sets and offering elevated remuneration.Vance's observations arrive as the current administration implements extensive reforms targeting the system. An executive directive issued on September 18 instructs the Departments of State, Labour and Homeland Security to evaluate whether a sponsoring firm has recently executed, or intends to execute, layoffs affecting comparable domestic employees during the application review process. Additionally, the directive mandates that the Labour Department scrutinise previously filed labour-condition applications to identify potential regulatory violations.Simultaneously, the administration has established a tiered selection mechanism that prioritises higher-salaried roles.Nevertheless, Vance intimated that these adjustments might still fall short of addressing core systemic flaws.“My view is the H-1B programme is completely broken, and I’d be very supportive of just eliminating it,” he said. “But while we have it, what we have to do is protect American workers.”These statements arrive amidst persistent judicial challenges targeting the USD 100,000 fee. On October 1, a federal magistrate enjoined the charge after determining that the administration failed to adhere to mandatory administrative rulemaking protocols, compounding an earlier judicial injunction issued earlier in the year.Disclaimer: This post has been auto-published from an agency feed without any modifications to the text and has not been reviewed by an editor

Washington, DC [US], October 2 : US President Donald Trump indicated that his administration might request European nations to tap into their diesel reserves as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate rising fuel costs driven by global supply disruptions.

<nh-chunk-delimit />Addressing reporters briefly, Trump was questioned regarding whether he intended to approach European governments to release emergency diesel supplies to lower market rates.“We may do that,” Trump said.He added that “prices are coming down.”Trump delivered these comments during his visit to Texas and Oklahoma, undertaken for engagements centred on his administration's economic and trade agendas. The statement follows deliberations within the administration over alternative measures to cool elevated diesel expenses, which include evaluating potential curbs on American diesel shipments abroad. In a television interview on Sunday, Trump acknowledged that constraints on exports are under active review.“Well, we're thinking about it very seriously,” Trump said when asked about a possible diesel export ban.“That can oftentimes lead to a little bit of an increase on gasoline for cars. So we're looking at it very seriously. We may do it,” he said.Trump pointed to attacks on Russian refining infrastructure rather than turbulence in the Middle East as a primary driver behind current market constraints.“The big problem is the refineries in Russia are being blown up,” Trump said in that interview.“This isn’t really a Middle Eastern problem. This is more of a Russia problem, that Ukraine and Russia are going at it, and Ukraine is blowing up diesel refineries in Russia because they do a lot of the refining,” he said. While limiting outbound shipments has been weighed as a mechanism to boost domestic stockpiles and lower costs for local consumers, trade bodies warn such interventions carry international repercussions.Over 30 American corporate, manufacturing and energy associations have voiced strong opposition to export curbs, cautioning that restrictions could disincentivise domestic refining and inadvertently drive prices higher.Alternatively, seeking inventory releases from European partners would focus on expanding overall market availability rather than restricting American trade flows.Trump did not specify on Thursday which European capitals might be approached, the volume of fuel targeted or whether preliminary talks had commenced.Diesel fuel remains politically and economically vital due to its heavy utilisation across transport, farming, construction and heavy industry, with higher tariffs rippling rapidly through broader supply chains.Disclaimer: This post has been auto-published from an agency feed without any modifications to the text and has not been reviewed by an editor

Washington, DC [US], October 2 : US President Donald Trump cautioned that Iran faces severe repercussions if Tehran turns out to be linked to an onboard assault on a Flydubai passenger aircraft, noting that intelligence pointing towards a potential Iranian connection remains under active review.

<nh-chunk-delimit />Addressing journalists prior to his departure from the White House, bound for Texas, Trump faced questions regarding whether intelligence briefings suggested the co-pilot involved in the Flydubai emergency had ties to Iran. “We're working on it right now. They're being very open with us. Uh, I would say the answer based on what I'm hearing is yes, but we're working on it right now,” Trump stated. When asked if the individual could have been stationed on the aircraft via Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or radicalised through alternative means, Trump remarked, “It could have been, yeah.”While highlighting that the situation remains under scrutiny, Trump offered no definitive proof connecting Tehran to the event.Later in the briefing, when directly questioned on whether Washington would launch a military response against Tehran should evidence implicate them, Trump answered, “Oh, they'll be hit very hard. Don't worry. You just ask them. They know what happened. They'll be hit very hard.”The US leader subsequently expanded his assessment to cover Iran's financial status, military readiness and the Strait of Hormuz. “Look, Iran now has got 301 per cent inflation. Their money is valueless. Their economy is gone. They have no military. They have no anti-aircraft computers. They have very little going, and we control the strait,” Trump said.Furthermore, the President asserted that petroleum shipments routed by the United States through the Strait of Hormuz have surpassed pre-conflict volumes. “We took out more oil in the last two days than at any time in the history of the Strait, and that includes before the war,” he noted.Commending the armed forces, Trump indicated he faces an impending determination regarding Tehran's subsequent actions. “I tell you what, you know what it is, our Navy is incredible. Our military is incredible, the job they've done. Now I have to make a decision. They'll either sign a very fair deal or they won't exist any longer,” he stated.Reaffirming a prior stance, Trump emphasised that Tehran will be barred from acquiring atomic capabilities. “They cannot have nuclear weapons and they won't have, and they're agreeing not to have,” he said.Addressing queries concerning the domestic political fallout of the conflict with Iran, Trump conceded potential implications for upcoming midterm contests, though he contended that barring Tehran from nuclear arms would prove advantageous. “Well, it's possible. I don't it should help because Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump observed. The Flydubai event centred on a Dubai-originating service destined for Israel, which diverted towards Saudi territory after the co-pilot allegedly set upon the Indian captain and attempted to down the aircraft. The captain successfully unlocked the cockpit door, enabling travellers and crew to subdue the attacker and secure a safe landing. Multiple nations are currently pursuing inquiries, though public records showed no verified proof of Iranian complicity as of Thursday. The episode unfolds against a backdrop of heightened bilateral strain following the recent conflict and renewed American pressure targeting Iran's atomic development. Thursday's remarks brought sharp cautions from the White House, though officials stopped short of attributing formal responsibility to Tehran for the cockpit incident.Disclaimer: This post has been auto-published from an agency feed without any modifications to the text and has not been reviewed by an editor

Smit Machchhar, the flydubai hero pilot, told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he recited Hanuman Chalisa-- a devotional hymn -- to draw courage during the confrontation with his Omani co-pilot aboard the flight to Tel Aviv, an act that became a global talking point.

<nh-chunk-delimit /> During a phone call with PM Modi, the injured pilot, who received global appreciation for saving 170 lives on the flydubai flight despite facing a life-threatening attack in the cockpit, said the Prime Minister is his biggest idol.PM Modi, on his part, applauded the courage and resourcefulness of Captain Machchhar, saying he prevented a possible 9/11 attack.Captain Machchhar is presently recuperating at a hospital in the UAE. He told PM Modi about what gave him the courage to fight off the attacking co-pilot, believed to be a religious fanatic."Whenever I am in pain, I recite Hanuman Chalisa. At that time also, I was reciting Hanuman Chalisa, and I know that it was God who saved me," he said.Visibly moved and emotional over receiving a telephone call from PM Modi, Machchhar said, "You are my biggest idol, I am feeling very proud."PM Modi consoled him, validating his emotions. "You have done such a brave act that people from across India and the world want to talk to you.""You have made the country proud," the PM Modi told Machchhar. The injured pilot later told PM Modi that he prays every morning. "I have a two-year-old son. He sits in my lap when I pray. I recite Hanuman Chalisa to him because we are away from the country, but not away from our traditions."Earlier on Thursday, PM Modi also spoke with the family members of Captain Smit Machchhar, lauding his valour mid-air. The Prime Minister also assured the Indian pilot and his family of all possible help, including medical assistance in his recovery.Speaking to his mother, Geeta Ben, PM Modi applauded Captain Machchhar's upbringing with the values and teachings of the Bhagavad Gita.Smit Machchhar's heroics mid-air in the flydubai's Dubai-Tel Aviv flight came when he was attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot inside the cockpit. Despite facing grievous injuries, the 'collapsed' captain didn't give in and opened the cockpit door by pressing the door latch, allowing the passengers to enter the cockpit and subdue the attacking co-pilot.The captain's presence of mind, resourcefulness and act of bravery saved the lives of more than 170 people on board.

The FlyDubai flight that made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after an alleged cockpit attack has left investigators with a series of unanswered questions, from the co-pilot's motive and the weapon used to whether the incident was planned or involved anyone else.

<nh-chunk-delimit />FlyDubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when an altercation broke out in the cockpit. Saudi Arabia's preliminary investigation has confirmed that the co-pilot assaulted the captain, leaving both men injured. The aircraft was eventually diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely with 174 passengers and eight crew members on board. The United Arab Emirates has since opened a formal investigation into the incident. Authorities are examining the circumstances and motive behind the attack, including whether it was connected to terrorist activity, involved prior planning or was directed by someone else. The UAE has jurisdiction over the case because the aircraft is registered there. That leaves investigators with several key questions: Why did the co-pilot attack the captain? Was the assault an attempt to take control of the aircraft? Did he act alone? How did the incident begin, and what was used to attack the captain?Another major question concerns the object used in the attack. Reports have described the assault as involving a sharp weapon, but authorities have not publicly established what was used. Investigators will also need to determine how any prohibited object could have entered the aircraft, if a knife or similar weapon was involved.Who is the co-pilot?The co-pilot's identity has not been publicly released. Israeli officials have identified him as an Omani national, but neither the UAE nor Oman has publicly confirmed his identity. Saudi authorities detained him after the emergency landing before he was transferred to the UAE along with the injured captain. The lack of an official identity has left several details about the co-pilot's background unclear.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that the co-pilot had undergone radical Islamist indoctrination. However, that claim has not been independently established by investigators, and the UAE has urged the public and media not to speculate while the probe is underway. The investigation will therefore have to establish whether there was any ideological or other motive behind the attack, rather than relying on early claims made while the circumstances remain under examination. How did passengers help regain control? The aircraft's rapid descent turned the cockpit confrontation into an emergency involving everyone on board. The captain, Indian national Smit Machchhar, was injured during the confrontation but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene. The co-pilot was eventually restrained and the aircraft was diverted to Saudi Arabia. Machchhar was later moved to Abu Dhabi for further treatment and has been reported to be recovering well.Indian officials have praised Machchhar's actions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke of his courage in helping avert what could have been a major disaster.UAE probe to examine possible terror linkThe UAE investigation is now looking beyond the immediate cockpit assault. The UAE Attorney General has ordered a specialist team to establish what happened and examine the circumstances and motives behind the incident. Investigators are specifically looking into whether there was any terrorist purpose, prior planning or external direction.Saudi Arabia has also begun examining the incident. Its preliminary findings established that the co-pilot assaulted the captain, while a UAE security team participated in the initial investigation. Both pilots were later transferred to Abu Dhabi after receiving medical clearance.Israeli officials are also involved in the wider investigation, given that the flight was bound for Tel Aviv and most of the passengers were Israeli. What about the Iran angle? The incident has also acquired a wider geopolitical dimension because of the ongoing conflict involving Iran.US President Donald Trump has suggested that Iran may have been connected to the attack, but he has not publicly provided evidence for that claim. Netanyahu has also said it is too early to determine whether Iran was involved. There is currently no publicly established evidence confirming an Iranian connection. For investigators, establishing whether the co-pilot acted alone or whether anyone else was involved will be central to determining the motive. The incident has also raised questions about security procedures for flight crews, particularly because the alleged attacker was a member of the flight crew rather than an outside passenger.Investigators will have to examine the co-pilot's background, screening, access to the cockpit and the circumstances that allowed the confrontation to escalate during the flight. The probe will also look at how the aircraft was brought under control after the captain was attacked. For now, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other authorities involved in the investigation have released only limited details. During the incident, the co-pilot attacked Captain Machchhar with a knife, causing the aircraft to enter a steep descent. The Indian commander fought off the aggressor and managed to unlatch the cockpit door, enabling passengers to rush forward, enter the flight deck, and overpower the perpetrator. Following the subduing of the attacker, medical assistance was administered to the seriously wounded pilot as the aircraft executed an emergency diversion into Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.New Delhi Monitors Pilot's RecoveryReiterating tributes to Captain Machchhar's gallantry, New Delhi expressed profound gratitude on Thursday for the global acclaim and backing directed towards the pilot for his heroic actions in preserving numerous lives. In an official release issued late Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that it remains closely monitoring the medical progress of Captain Machchhar."After receiving initial medical treatment in a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, he has now been shifted to Abu Dhabi for continued medical attention and recovery. Our Ambassador in UAE met Captain Machchhar in hospital and enquired about his well-being," the MEA stated. "Earlier, he also met his family and assured all possible support for the Captain's health and well-being. Our Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate in Dubai are in close touch with the local authorities in the matter. We once again salute Captain Smit Machchhar's valour and courage. We also convey our deep appreciation for the admiration and support he has received from across the world for his act of gallantry," the release added. Brazil's ethanol sector is entering a new phase as emerging technologies in agriculture, aviation and maritime transport are expected to drive demand for the biofuel beyond conventional sugarcane-powered vehicles, according to Henrique Berbert de Amorim Neto, president of the Local Productive Arrangement for Alcohol (APLA).

<nh-chunk-delimit />New Frontiers in Ethanol DemandSpeaking to Brasil 247 during the Global Agribusiness Forum (GAFFFF) in São Paulo, Amorim said agricultural machinery powered by ethanol could become a major source of new demand. He noted that manufacturers are developing ethanol-powered tractors and sugarcane harvesters, while other technologies are exploring flex-fuel systems capable of incorporating ethanol into diesel engines.Amorim said these developments are converging around the use of ethanol to reduce carbon emissions. He also dismissed concerns that higher ethanol blends in gasoline could damage vehicle engines, calling such claims a fallacy. According to him, Brazil's experience with ethanol-powered vehicles dates back to 1975, while studies by companies and universities have supported increased blending, as per reports by Brasil 247.Expansion into Aviation, Maritime, and ProductionHe said ethanol is also gaining potential applications in aviation and maritime transport. APLA is working with ApexBrasil to promote Brazilian sugar, ethanol and energy technologies in international markets, including countries with existing or potential sugarcane and corn production.Amorim pointed to growing opportunities in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and marine bunker fuel. He said ethanol-based solutions could contribute to decarbonising maritime transport, while demand from the aviation sector could require a substantial expansion of ethanol production.Corn Ethanol Leading the ChargeBrazil's production capacity, he said, will need to grow significantly to meet emerging demand. Corn ethanol is currently emerging as the main frontier for this expansion.Amorim said corn-based production has grown rapidly and could account for nearly 30 per cent of Brazil's ethanol output this year, compared with about 25 per cent last year, as reported by Brasil 247. The shift highlights the diversification of Brazil's ethanol industry, which has expanded considerably since the launch of the Proálcool programme in 1975, with ethanol production now extending beyond its traditional dependence on sugarcane.(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by Asianet Newsable English staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

The United States military has deployed two additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, bolstering defences around vital oil and natural gas infrastructure as Washington prepares for potential large-scale military engagements with Iran.

<nh-chunk-delimit />According to an Axios report citing two American officials and a regional source, the strategic deployments follow concerns raised by Saudi and Qatari leaders that Tehran could target their energy assets if Washington resumes major offensive operations against Iran. One Patriot unit was positioned in Saudi Arabia to protect a major petroleum installation, while a second was sent to Qatar to safeguard a primary natural gas facility, Axios reported. The manoeuvre highlights the acute vulnerabilities facing Gulf energy networks should the U.S.-Iran conflict escalate further. In August, when U.S. President Donald Trump weighed a major offensive involving strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, the heads of Saudi Arabia and Qatar reportedly implored him to abandon the strategy over fears of retaliatory Iranian attacks targeting their own oil and gas facilities, Axios detailed.Any substantial strike against petroleum or gas infrastructure across the region risks destabilising global energy supplies and tightening international markets, particularly if hostilities disrupt maritime transit through critical regional shipping lanes. The supplementary Patriot deployments also coincide with mounting strain on American air defence stockpiles. Patriot batteries, and especially their interceptor missiles, have faced unprecedented demand since the outbreak of hostilities with Iran.Data from an assessment by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies indicated that U.S. Patriot interceptor reserves had dropped below 1,000 units following heavy expenditure throughout the conflict with Iran.Concurrently, the Pentagon is expanding its force posture across the Middle East, dispatching additional warships, combat aircraft, and military personnel to the theatre. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, carrying thousands of U.S. Marines, has likewise arrived in the region, reinforcing Washington's growing military footprint in the Middle East. The Patriot air and missile defence platform operates as a land-based system utilised by American and allied forces to protect personnel and critical assets from airborne threats.According to the U.S. Army, the Patriot is capable of countering aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles, with an operational battery centred around a radar network, an engagement control station, and missile launchers. The advanced PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptor utilises hit-to-kill technology, destroying incoming targets through direct physical impact. It features a dual-pulse solid propellant rocket motor that provides extended range, higher altitude capabilities, and enhanced agility compared to earlier PAC-3 versions.A standard Patriot battery configuration includes a multifunction radar, an engagement control station, and launcher platforms. Depending on the specific configuration, a single launcher is capable of housing up to 12 PAC-3 MSE interceptors.ANI
