BJP To Announce Bihar's New CM Tomorrow; Nitish Kumar Set To Resign

ABP Live 1 week ago

Bihar is set for a major political transition as the BJP legislature party is scheduled to meet on April 14 to elect its new leader, who will become the next Chief Minister.

The development comes ahead of the expected resignation of incumbent Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The meeting, to be held in the presence of central observer Shivraj Singh Chouhan, will be followed by a broader NDA legislature party gathering where the new leader's name will be formally announced. The move signals a significant shift in the state's political leadership and governance direction.

Transition Underway

A notification from the cabinet secretariat confirmed that Kumar will chair a cabinet meeting at 11 am on April 14, widely expected to be his last in office. Following the meeting, he is likely to submit his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain.

JD(U) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha had earlier indicated that the process of forming a new government would begin after April 13. Senior party leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary also confirmed that the next Chief Minister would be chosen by the NDA, on the BJP's recommendation.

BJP Takes Charge

The BJP has appointed Shivraj Singh Chouhan as central observer to oversee the election of the legislature party leader in Bihar. The party's parliamentary board said Chouhan will supervise the leadership selection process.

While the BJP appears cautious, internal discussions are underway, with leaders maintaining silence on the final choice.

Names in the Fray

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is seen as a frontrunner. Other names doing the rounds include Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, and state ministers Lakhendra Paswan and Shreyasi Singh.

Party sources say each contender offers distinct caste and political advantages. Choudhary's elevation could preserve the 'Luv Kush' social coalition, while Rai may attract Yadav support. Paswan's name is linked to Dalit outreach, and Singh's candidature could signal a push for youth and gender representation.

Scope for Surprise

Despite speculation, BJP leaders insist the final decision rests with the central leadership, raising the possibility of an unexpected choice-similar to past selections in other states.

The transition marks a significant shift in Bihar's political landscape, with the BJP poised to take direct control of the state's leadership.
