Thousands of devotees gathered at Madurai's historic Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple on Thursday for its Maha Kumbabishekam, held after a gap of 17 years.
The sacred reconsecration ceremony, last performed at the temple in 2009, saw sanctified water poured over its towering gopurams and golden vimanas following days of Vedic chanting and rituals. Traditionally conducted periodically to renew a temple's spiritual sanctity, this edition came after extensive restoration and safety work at the centuries-old complex, including repairs undertaken following the 2018 fire.
