AMC wakes up to Thaltej-Gota health scareMayor Hitesh Barot, AMC teams rush to societies after Mirror report about people falling ill; Akanksha Apt, Navratna Avenue, Vinayak Bungalows, Vandemataram Flats among the societies worst affected in western A'bad

Ahmedabad Mirror 2 weeks ago

A day after Mirror reported the contaminated water crisis in Thaltej-Gota, Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot and officials of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation visited Akanksha Apartment and other affected societies on Friday, where residents reported diarrhoea, vomiting and other water-borne illnesses allegedly caused by sewage-mixed drinking water.

The mayor met residents and assured them that the issue would be resolved at the earliest. AMC also deployed a 30-member medical team to the area on Wednesday.

The team conducted health surveys, distributed medicines and provided medical assistance to residents.

According to residents, more than 1,000 people living in four to five societies have been affected by the contaminated water supply. Residents alleged that sewage water mixed with drinking water for nearly four days, causing a large number of people to suffer from diarrhoea, vomiting and other stomach-related illnesses.

Some residents criticised the civic administration, questioning why action was taken only after the issue received public attention.

AMC Health Officer Bhavin Solanki said, "Cases of diarrhoea and vomiting were reported after sewage-contaminated water entered the drinking water supply in the affected societies. Our health teams have been deployed in the area and medicines are being distributed to residents. The situation is currently stable and under control."

The worst-hit societies include Akanksha Apartment in Gota ward, Navratna Avenue and Vinayak Bungalows in Thaltej ward and Vandemataram Flats.

Residents of Akanksha Apartment, Navratna Avenue, Vinayak Bungalows, Vandemataram Flats and nearby societies alleged that sewage water mixed with the drinking water supply for nearly four days, leading to a surge in illness cases.

While AMC has reported around 50 confirmed cases, residents claim the actual number of affected people is much higher.
