A 46-year-old man was killed after an iron barricade installed beneath an under-construction bridge fell onto a moving rickshaw on SG Highway on Sunday morning.

The impact caused the vehicle to overturn near the West Gate building, close to the YMCA Club.

The deceased has been identified as Ajay Mahanto, a native of Bihar who was residing in Tragad. He was on his way to work in Changodar when the incident occurred.

According to the police, a bridge connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar is currently under construction at the site. As part of safety measures, iron sheets and barricades had been installed beneath the structure. On Sunday morning, as a bus passed through the stretch, one of the iron sheets or barricades reportedly came loose and fell onto a rickshaw travelling behind it.

The driver lost control after the barricade struck the vehicle, causing it to overturn. Mahanto, who was seated at the rear, sustained grievous injuries and died.

Sarkhej police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated an investigation. Officials are examining whether there was any negligence on the part of the contractor. Police said such barricades are typically secured firmly with rods, but some may have been left loose, potentially leading to the accident.
