Surat: In a high-stakes political move ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has arranged four special trains to transport approximately 5,000 Bengali voters from Surat, Gujarat, to Kolkata, with the party bearing the entire cost.

The initiative, coordinated by the Surat BJP office and the 'Surat Bengali Samaj,' targets the over 2.5 lakh Bengali workers employed in Surat's diamond, jewelry, and textile markets. Many of these voters cannot afford expensive tickets or struggle with reservation unavailability, especially during summer vacation season. The BJP has stepped in to offer completely free travel, covering every expense from tickets to logistics.

Strict verification has been conducted to ensure only genuine, registered voters benefit. According to community leader Vasudev Adhikari, around 1,200 to 1,500 forms were rejected due to outdated voter cards or missing names in electoral rolls. "This is a golden opportunity for middle and poor-class artisans," Adhikari said, adding that the BJP wants to prove it stands by the workers.

The party's strategy goes beyond the 5,000 travelers. BJP leaders believe these voters will influence their family members back in Bengal, potentially impacting 10 to 12 lakh votes indirectly. Community organizations are working day and night, preparing lists and guiding voters on train schedules aligned with election phases.

While opposition parties have criticized the move as an attempt to ferry voters, the BJP maintains it is facilitating the democratic rights of Bengali workers who wish to vote but cannot afford travel. With summer vacations already causing packed trains, the free service has generated excitement among Surat's Bengali community, many of whom now see a clear path to cast their ballots for what they call "change in Bengal."
