Actor-singer Cynthia Erivo says she has been receiving "very worried" messages from her Wicked co-star Ariana Grande as she juggles an intense stage schedule with marathon training.
Speaking during a television appearance, Erivo opened up about the physical and emotional demands of her current one-woman stage production of Dracula, in which she performs multiple roles. The production requires her to navigate nearly 20,000 words while sustaining high energy across characters. Reflecting on the support from her current and former co-stars, she said, "Ari is very, very worried that I'm not resting enough, so she's consistently texting." She added that Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum have also been checking in regularly. "Everyone's so lovely, it feels like we have a little bit of a family," she said.
Erivo described her process of preparing for the demanding role, explaining that memorisation comes through understanding each character's intent. "What you have to do is learn it with a reason… that's the only way I can commit it to memory," she said.
Alongside rehearsals and performances, the actor is also training for the London Marathon, aiming to complete it in under three hours and 30 minutes. She said she often uses her training time to rehearse mentally. "Whilst I'm running, I run the run lines in my head. I'm trying to make good use of every moment," she said.
The intensity of her schedule, however, comes with its challenges. "Everything is on and everything is firing all the time… when you come off, you go, 'Where am I?'" she said, adding that it often takes her time to unwind after performances.
