A suspected case of food poisoning at Sardar Patel Girls Hostel in Memnagar has left 57 students unwell, once again raising concerns over food safety and hygiene standards in the city.
The affected students were rushed to Sterling Hospital after reporting symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and weakness.
According to officials, 21 students were initially admitted with severe symptoms, while 36 received primary treatment and were discharged. Of those admitted, three have since been discharged, with 18 students still under observation. Some reportedly experienced fluctuating blood pressure and are being closely monitored.
Preliminary information suggests that several students had complained of mild stomach pain since Friday, but the situation escalated on Sunday when many developed severe symptoms simultaneously, prompting hospitalisation.
Teams from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's health and food departments inspected the hostel following the incident. Initial findings point to food poisoning, and food and water samples have been collected for laboratory testing.
Health officials said the affected students had consumed food items such as dabeli and pani puri from outside vendors. At the hostel, meals served included idada, sev khamani and khichdi. The hostel accommodates around 900 students, of whom 57 were affected.
Notably, this is the second major food poisoning incident reported in Ahmedabad within a week. Earlier, several people fell ill after attending a community meal at a picnic house near Kankaria. Repeated incidents such as these have intensified concerns over food quality and hygiene standards in the city.
