Sending money abroad has suddenly become a headache for many in Ahmedabad, as a glitch on the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal is preventing the submission of a key certificate.
Chartered accountants say repeated errors are halting filings midway, leaving them with no clear fix. The issue centres on Form 146, used to file the "certificate of an accountant for payments to a non-resident".
Instead of completing the process, the portal displays a vague message: "Submission failed! Response from server. Please fix the following issues and try to submit again," without specifying what has gone wrong.
The lack of clarity is slowing work and creating confusion among professionals handling time-sensitive filings. "New forms have been introduced from April 1 under revised provisions, and many CAs and their clients are facing teething issues on the portal. The system is still stabilising, which is why such errors are occurring," said CA Ashish Sharma, secretary of the Chartered Accountants Association, Ahmedabad.
Several CAs said the problem is persistent rather than occasional. "We are trying again and again, but the form is not getting submitted. The system does not tell us what exactly is wrong, so we are stuck," said a city-based CA.
The issue is particularly stressful as such filings are often tied to strict compliance timelines, especially in cases involving foreign payments. Delays can lead to penalties or client dissatisfaction.
Income Tax Department officials, however, described it as a temporary technical issue. "At times, such errors occur due to server load or technical glitches. Users can try again after some time or use updated browsers. If the issue continues, they should raise a grievance on the portal," an official said.
CAs insist the problem is more widespread than acknowledged and remains unresolved despite repeated attempts.
