The upcoming 2026-27 academic year will see the total approved intake of colleges affiliated with the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) increase from 93,563 seats in 2025-26 to 98,938 seats in 2026-27, a rise of 5,375 seats.
The year will also see a steady expansion of colleges affiliated with GTU, with the total number of institutes growing from 468 to 509.
Officials at GTU said that course-wise, B Pharmacy had the most growth with 10 new institutes, followed by BBA (+8), MBA and BCA (+7 each), and MCA (+6). Diploma Engineering and D Pharmacy saw moderate growth with two colleges each and Diploma Architecture added a new institute. Architecture, Interior Design and Hotel Management and Catering Technology (HMCT) numbers remained unchanged. The number of engineering colleges went down by two.
A closer look at programme-wise expansion shows that the increase is distributed across a diverse range of courses. Engineering programmes, despite a slight drop in the number of institutes, have added 630 seats, indicating higher capacity per college. Diploma engineering continues to lead with the largest growth of 1,110 additional seats, while BCA (+960) and BBA (+810) reflect a strong tilt toward IT and management education.
Professional courses like MBA (+585) and MCA (+450) have also expanded significantly, alongside pharmacy, where B Pharmacy added 670 seats and D Pharmacy 120 seats. Smaller but notable increases are seen in Diploma Architecture (+40 seats), while Architecture, Interior Design and HMCT remain stable.
KN Kher, registrar of GTU, said, "We have given no objection certificate to these institutes, but as part of the process, they will be evaluated for infrastructure, academic and non-academic manpower, among other facilities, before they get a final nod to begin academics from the new academic year," he said. The GTU will issue final affiliation to the colleges as per the deadline set by AICTE, and various councils under which the professional courses are offered.
