Thousands of external students at Gujarat University are facing uncertainty with internships made mandatory for them as well. While the rule has already been implemented for regular final-year students under the National Education Policy, the university is yet to issue clear guidelines for external candidates.
The move comes at a time when the application process for external examinations is underway, leaving many students aware of the requirement.
Why the concern
Every year, thousands of students enrol as external students across arts, commerce and other streams. This format is typically opted for by students who are unable to attend regular college.
According to sources, even regular students struggle to complete internships due to limited institutional support, with many arranging them independently or submitting certificates through private agencies. A similar situation is now expected for external candidates, who may have to rush to complete internships at the last moment.
Meanwhile, confusion also persists over the implementation of honours degrees. The university has not clarified which colleges will offer the fourth year required for honours.
