The Gujarat High Court has declined to interfere with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's decision to widen an approach road leading to the Narendra Modi Stadium and Sardar Patel Sports Complex at Motera.
The vacation bench of Justice LS Pirzada refused to grant interim protection to four petitioners who had approached the court challenging the action initiated by the AMC and its Standing Committee for widening the existing road to a 100-feet corridor. The petitioners had contended that the proposed widening served no genuine public purpose and alleged that the exercise was unnecessary.
Appearing on behalf of the AMC, government pleader GH Virk opposed the challenge and submitted that the road constituted an important approach corridor leading towards the Narendra Modi Stadium and the Sardar Patel Sports Complex, both of which are expected to play a central role in the city's preparations for hosting major international sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
According to AMC, statutory procedures had been followed, objections had been invited and considered, and the Standing Committee had taken a conscious decision after examining the matter. It was therefore submitted that no case for judicial interference at the interim stage was made out.
The widening of the road is expected to ease traffic movement, improve emergency access and strengthen connectivity to the sports infrastructure hub that has increasingly become the focal point of Ahmedabad's sporting and urban development plans.
