A student of LD College of Engineering got injured after a chunk of ceiling plaster fell on him inside the B Block hostel room on Thursday night.

While the student was rushed to Sola Civil hospital for immediate medical attention, the incident highlighted the pathetic condition of hostels in among the best government engineering colleges in the state.

The incident occurred when the final year engineering student was preparing his internship report while sitting on the bed. College officials said all necessary tests were conducted on him including MRI, X-Rays and he was sent back to hostel on Wednesday. He was sent home in Bhuj in an ambulance, as a precautionary measure, college officials said.

The incident invoked massive anger among the hostel residents with both students union, National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) demanded immediate action and revamp the hostel infrastructure for the safety of the students.

"The state government's road and building department is inspecting each and every hostel room. Based on their analysis, a decision will be made if hostel rooms require renovation or students need to be shifted to other hostel blocks in better condition," said Nilay Bhuptani, principal of the LDCE.

Notably, Rs 23.32 crore of a total financial allocation of Rs 194 crore have been allocated for infrastructural upgrade of the two boys hostel blocks of the college.
