The CBI registered an FIR against an individual for allegedly demanding Rs 40 lakh from an official of Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appelate Tribunal (CESTAT) to "settle" a departmental complaint.
The case also names unidentified public servants and private persons.
According to the complaint by Sarjeet Kumar, superintendent (AR), CESTAT Ahmedabad, Raval claimed he was acting on behalf of a senior CGST officer. Kumar told the CBI he received a vigilance notice from the CGST Ahmedabad (South) Commissionerate on July 27 and submitted his reply on August 7, denying the allegations. On August 14, Raval allegedly called Kumar, repeated the demand and met him in Gandhinagar the next day, displaying confidential personal and service details to press his claim. He allegedly promised to submit favourable evidence.
Kumar lodged a complaint with the CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch in Gandhinagar, leading to the FIR.
