The Ahmedabad Metro rail will soon get driverless trains. The state government has placed an order for 34 advanced metro train sets to strengthen urban public transport in the state, a move expected to increase the frequency of metro services and reduce waiting time for commuters in future.
The order includes 10 trainsets for the Ahmedabad Metro Phase-II project and 24 for the upcoming Surat Metro. These trains are being manufactured at Titagarh's modern manufacturing facility in Kolkata.
The advanced driverless technology in the new trains will ensure punctuality and energy efficiency. Equipped with real-time monitoring, automated braking systems, CCTV surveillance, fire detection systems and fail-safe door operations, the trains aim to offer a safer and more comfortable travel experience.
The initiative is expected to significantly enhance public transportation infrastructure in Gujarat while also promoting domestic manufacturing capabilities. Officials said the project will create employment opportunities, support skill development and help reduce foreign exchange outflow by boosting indigenous production.
Currently, Ahmedabad's metro network spans about 68.2 km, with 32 trainsets already in operation on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar corridor. The addition of 10 new trainsets will increase train frequency, reduce waiting time and improve convenience for passengers.
Construction of the 40.3-km Surat Metro network is progressing rapidly. Once operational, the project will significantly ease urban mobility in Surat, reduce congestion and provide sustainable transport options for the city's growing population.
