Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has praised Ranbir Kapoor's commitment during the making of Sanju, revealing that the actor routinely reported to the set at 3 am to complete his elaborate prosthetic makeup before a 7 am shoot.
Speaking to IANS, Hirani addressed the ongoing debate over actors demanding shorter work shifts and said he has not encountered such an attitude among the performers he has worked with. "They (actors) understand the importance of, at least the ones I have worked with. They understand the importance. If the work has to be done, it has to be completed. They will finish it," he said. Recalling the shoot of the Sanju, Hirani said Ranbir's transformation into Sanjay Dutt required four to five hours of makeup every day. "I remember Ranbir; he used to have a beard in the movie, so it used to take him four to five hours for makeup. So if we had a 7 am shift, he would come at 3 am and sit in Film City at night alone," the director said.
"I used to arrive at 6 am, and there used to be a van outside, a lamp hanging outside, and inside, his makeup used to be underway. And then we would shoot with him for 12 whole hours. He never complained about it. Never, to anyone."
Hirani added that, in his experience, he has rarely seen actors complain about demanding schedules when the work requires it.
Released in 2018, Sanju traced the turbulent life of Dutt, chronicling his battle with drug addiction, his imprisonment and the controversy surrounding his alleged links to the 1993 Bombay serial blasts case.IANS
