Tributes poured in for Ajinkya Rahane after the former India vice-captain announced his retirement from international cricket, with Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and several teammates praising his professionalism, leadership and contribution to Indian cricket.
Rahane, 38, ended a distinguished 12-year international career on Thursday after playing 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is.
Rohit Sharma said Rahane's "commitment and professionalism" always set him apart. "We've shared the dressing room for so many years and I know how much hard work has gone into everything you've achieved," Rohit wrote on X.
India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill described Rahane as a role model who led the team through some of its toughest days. "Thank you for the memories and the lessons on and off the field," Gill posted.
Former head coach Ravi Shastri, under whom Rahane captained India to a memorable 2-1 Test series win in Australia in 2020-21, called him "one of India's most committed cricketers" who gave yeoman service to Mumbai and Indian cricket.
Rishabh Pant praised Rahane as "calm in every situation" and "a leader by example", while Suryakumar Yadav credited his resilience and composure for inspiring a generation of cricketers.
Former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also hailed Rahane as one of the finest players of his generation, congratulating him on a remarkable career and wishing him success in his "second innings."
