Thaltej and Godhavi will soon be connected by Rs 2,825-crore rapid rail network. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has invited bids for detailed design consultancy for two new Metro Phase-3 corridors, pressing ahead even as the Detailed Project Report awaits central government approval.
The larger of the two is a proposed hybrid Metro-RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System) corridor from Godhavi to Canal Road Metro Station, with 7.505 km of elevated viaduct and six stations. From Thaltej Gam to Canal Road Metro Station, the second corridor covers 3.313 km of elevated viaduct with three elevated stations. Together they will add nearly 10.8 km of elevated metro infrastructure and nine stations to Ahmedabad's expanding rapid transit network, at a project cost of Rs 2,825 crore.
The consultancy covers detailed structural and architectural designs for stations and elevated viaducts on both routes.
The Godhavi corridor is the more strategically significant of the two. The state government is planning a major sports village and allied infrastructure in the Godhavi area for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The hybrid Metro-RRTS design would integrate city metro and higher-speed rapid rail transit on shared infrastructure, making it among the first such corridors in Gujarat.
DPR awaits Centre, but state presses ahead
The DPR for Phase-3 is still with the Union government for clearance. GMRC's move to start design work before that approval signals the state's intent to be ready when clearance comes. The 2030 Commonwealth Games deadline is driving the urgency.
