Swanky new Subhash Bridge RTO bldg to open in MayConstructed at estimated cost of Rs 55-60cr; will end years of delays, rent burden, public inconvenience

The much-awaited new building of the Subhash Bridge RTO is finally set to open in May, ending years of delays and rising costs, and bringing relief to citizens.

Authorities have confirmed that the new facility is likely to be inaugurated in the second or third week of May after the civic body elections. The project had been repeatedly postponed over the past two years, with deadlines continuously pushed back since 2024.

The new RTO building, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 55-60 crore near the Collector's office, promises a major upgrade in public service delivery. Designed as a centrally air-conditioned facility, it will house all essential citizen services-such as driving licences and vehicle-related work-on the ground floor itself.

Officials say this will significantly reduce the inconvenience faced by visitors. For the past seven to eight years, the Subhash Bridge RTO has been operating out of a rented two-storey building, costing the department nearly Rs 15 lakh per month. Citizens have often struggled with overcrowding and inefficient access to services in the existing setup.

RTO officer Nirav Bakshi confirmed that the project is now in its final stages. "The construction of the new RTO building is complete. Only minor finishing work remains, which will be completed in April. We will then inform the Transport Department in Gandhinagar, after which the inauguration will be scheduled in May," he said.

About the infrastructure, Bakshi said, "The new building is centrally air-conditioned. Keeping public convenience in mind, all citizen service counters-including licence and vehicle transfer-have been placed on the ground floor at one location. This will ensure people do not have to face unnecessary troubles."

In a major technological upgrade, a new AI-based driving test track has also been developed adjacent to the building. After the inauguration, driving tests will be conducted on this advanced track. The existing track will be dismantled and replaced with another AI-powered system in the near future.
