A startling incident has emerged from the high-security zone of Sabarmati Central Jail, where terror suspect and doctor Ahmed Mohiuddin Syed - recently arrested by the Gujarat ATS along with two other ISKP module accused - was assaulted by three inmates on Tuesday morning.
The attack occurred despite all four prisoners being housed in the inner barracks of the fortified enclosure.
Police sources said the scuffle broke out around 7 am after Syed allegedly got into an argument with fellow inmates, including prisoners booked for murder and POCSO offences. Tempers flared quickly, and Syed was beaten, sustaining injuries near his eye.
Jail staff rushed to the barrack on being alerted and shifted Syed to Civil Hospital. Ranip police soon arrived, registered a complaint and began a detailed inquiry.
'Why are you acting anti-national?'
Initial findings indicate the assailants confronted Syed, questioning him about his alleged anti-national activities. The argument reportedly spiralled into a violent brawl. Investi-gators, however, are examining all versions before drawing conclusions.
Attackers identified
According to police, the attackers have been identified as Anil, accused in a Kagdapith murder case; Shivam Verma, accused in an Amraiwadi murder case; and Ankit, accused in a Sabarmati POCSO case. The fact that such an incident unfolded in a high-security barrack has triggered questions over internal vigilance. Officials said jail staff, too, will come under scrutiny. Syed, who suffered injuries near his eye, is undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital. Security around him has been stepped up, with Shahibaug police joining Ranip personnel at the facility.
Earlier, the Gujarat ATS had arrested Ahmed Mohiuddin Syed from near the Adalaj Toll Plaza on the Ahmedabad-Mehsana Highway. Officers recovered two Glock pistols, a Beretta pistol, 30 live cartridges and castor oil from him. Later, two of his associates were arrested from Banaskantha.
