The Gujarat government has earmarked Rs 220 crore to strengthen infrastructure and promote destinations in tribal regions.
The announcement came during the seminar on 'Rural, Tribal and Wedding Tourism' held at AURO University in Surat on Friday.
Minister of State for Tourism Jayram Gamit said the state is actively working to unlock the tourism potential of tribal and rural belts, particularly in South Gujarat. He said the tourist footfall at Saputara grew from 1.13 lakh in FY 2023-24 to 1.19 lakh in FY 2025-26, reflecting increasing interest in nature-based destinations.
The government, he said, is focusing on eco-tourism, rural tourism and tribal heritage circuits, especially in regions like Dangs and Narmada.
Officials said these initiatives aim to attract both domestic and international tourists seeking authentic cultural experiences while ensuring sustainable development.
A key highlight of the push includes infrastructure upgrades, such as a Rs 9.85 crore project to develop Sunrise Point in Saputara. Authorities are also promoting wedding tourism in scenic tribal regions, positioning them as alternative destinations for experiential travel.
Officials from the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd said the strategy focuses on creating new tourism products while preserving local culture and ecology. Experts at the conference also stressed the need for responsible tourism practices to safeguard tribal traditions and natural resources.
The event also showcased traditional Warli paintings, underlining the importance of integrating local art and culture into tourism promotion. Stakeholders said targeted investments and community participation will be key to transforming Gujarat's tribal belt into a vibrant tourism hub.
