A gang travelling in a passenger rickshaw threatened, assaulted and robbed a 38-year-old woman from Vastral of her gold jewellery worth Rs 4.10 lakh on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred near Hatkeshwar crematorium, following which the police registered a robbery case and launched an investigation.
The woman had returned to Ahmedabad from her native place, Keshod. She boarded a passenger rickshaw near ST crossroads after getting off an ST Bus at Geeta Mandir bus stand at around 7.15 am.
Police said one man was already seated inside the rickshaw when she got in and after the vehicle started moving and the driver picked up two more men on the way. Investigators suspect all three passengers were part of the same gang.
As the rickshaw reached the Hatkeshwar Crematorium Road area, the accused allegedly noticed the gold ornaments worn by the woman and began pressuring her to hand them over. When she resisted, the three men allegedly surrounded her inside the moving rickshaw.
One of the accused slapped her and threatened to kill her if she did not surrender the jewellery. Frightened by the threat, the woman removed her ornaments and handed them over.
The stolen valuables included gold earrings and three gold rings weighing around 28 grams and valued at about Rs 4.10 lakh. After taking the jewellery, the gang dropped her near Hatkeshwar crematorium and fled in the rickshaw.
Police have formed teams to examine CCTV footage and trace the accused using details of the vehicle.
