The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) revised electricity tariffs effective 1 July 2025 under Order No. SMT.No.6 of 2025. The revision is part of TNERC's multi-year tariff framework introduced in 2022, which allows annual inflation-linked revisions capped at 6%.
This year's revision was 3.16% - based on the All India Consumer Price Index for April 2025.
The most important point for domestic consumers: the Tamil Nadu government has fully absorbed this hike for all residential connections. Your household electricity bill has not increased. The revision applies to commercial and industrial consumers only.

What changed from 1 July 2025 in accordance with TNERC Order No. SMT.No.6 of 2025
Domestic consumers (LT-IA) - no change
The Tamil Nadu government bears the full cost of the 3.16% hike for residential connections. Bills remain unchanged for household consumers.
Commercial consumers - 3.3% increase
Rate moved from Rs. 9.10/kWh to Rs. 9.40/kWh
Demand charges increased from Rs. 589/kVA/month to Rs. 608/kVA/month
Industrial consumers - 3.4% increase
Rate moved from Rs. 7.25/kWh to Rs. 7.50/kWh

TNEB domestic slab rates - FY 2025-26
TANGEDCO issues bimonthly bills for most domestic consumers. All units in the tables below refer to a two-month billing cycle.
For consumption up to 500 units bimonthly:

One thing to watch: Tamil Nadu uses a telescopic tariff system for consumption above 500 units bimonthly. Once your usage crosses 500 units, the lower slab benefits reduce and all units are recalculated at the higher rates. This is why bills can increase significantly beyond that threshold - even a small increase in consumption past 500 units can push the total bill up considerably.
How to calculate your TNEB bill
Understanding your bill is simpler than it looks. Follow these three steps.
Step 1 - Find your units consumed
Check your electricity bill or meter. Subtract the previous reading from the current reading. That number is your units consumed for the billing cycle.
Step 2 - Check which slab applies
Consumed 500 units or less bimonthly → use the first table above
Consumed above 500 units bimonthly → use the second table above
Step 3 - Calculate using the slab rates
Add up the charges for each bracket. The first 100 units are always free for domestic consumers.
Example 1 - 350 units bimonthly:
0-100 units: Free = Rs. 0
101-200 units: 100 × Rs. 2.35 = Rs. 235
201-350 units: 150 × Rs. 4.50 = Rs. 675
Total energy charge = Rs. 910
Example 2 - 600 units bimonthly: Consumption exceeds 500 units - telescopic rule applies:
0-100 units: Free = Rs. 0
101-400 units: 300 × Rs. 4.50 = Rs. 1,350
401-500 units: 100 × Rs. 6.30 = Rs. 630
501-600 units: 100 × Rs. 8.40 = Rs. 840
Total energy charge = Rs. 2,820
Note: Fixed charges, electricity duty at 15%, and meter rent are added to the energy charge on your final bill.
Additional charges to know
These charges appear on your bill in addition to the energy charge:
Electricity duty: 15% on energy charges - applies to all consumer categories
Fixed charges: No fixed charge for domestic consumers using up to 500 units bimonthly; applicable above that threshold based on contracted load
Peak hour surcharge: Commercial and industrial consumers are charged 25% extra between 06:00-10:00 and 18:00-22:00
Off-peak discount: A 5% reduction applies to consumption recorded between 22:00-05:00 for applicable categories
