Dr. Bitan Ghosh Introduces Elevent Index to Strengthen Startup Investment Assessment

Dr. Bitan Ghosh has introduced Elevent Index, a structured startup assessment framework designed to help investors and founders evaluate businesses through measurable parameters instead of relying primarily on instinct or presentation quality. The framework combines business quality, fundraising preparedness, and capital readiness into a single model intended to support more informed investment decisions.

The launch comes as India’s startup ecosystem continues to evolve, with investors placing greater emphasis on governance, financial discipline, execution capability, and long-term sustainability.
While innovative ideas remain important, investors are increasingly looking for structured methods to determine whether a startup is genuinely prepared to raise and manage capital.

According to Dr. Ghosh, Elevent Index emerged from years of practical experience in investment discussions and interactions with startup founders. He said the idea developed after recognising that his own approach to evaluating startups followed a consistent pattern but had never been formally documented.

The framework was further refined through conversations with entrepreneurs who shared that investment rejections often lacked specific feedback. Many founders wanted clearer insights into the strengths and weaknesses of their businesses rather than broad explanations that offered little direction.

Built around that observation, Elevent Index separates startup assessment into three independent components. The Investment Quality Score (IQS) evaluates the strength of the business by examining areas such as leadership, market opportunity, product innovation, financial health, governance, customer traction, operational readiness, competitive positioning, and long-term sustainability.

The Funding Readiness Score (FRS) focuses on whether a startup is prepared to raise external capital. It reviews factors including financial reporting, legal documentation, governance systems, fundraising strategy, due diligence preparation, and transaction readiness.

These two assessments are then combined to generate the Capital Readiness Score (CRS), providing an overall view of how prepared a company is to attract and effectively utilise investment capital.

One of the defining features of Elevent Index is its distinction between business quality and fundraising readiness. According to the framework, a startup may have a strong product, capable leadership, and market potential but still lack the governance, documentation, or financial preparation required by investors. Conversely, a company may appear well-prepared for fundraising while underlying business fundamentals remain weak.

By evaluating these areas separately before combining them, the framework aims to provide a more balanced understanding of a startup’s investment potential.

Industry experts have increasingly highlighted the need for structured investment evaluation as startup funding becomes more selective. Investors today are paying closer attention to capital efficiency, governance standards, financial transparency, and operational maturity alongside innovation and market opportunity.

Although no framework can eliminate investment risk, structured assessment methods can support more consistent decision-making and help founders identify areas that require improvement before approaching investors.

Dr. Ghosh brings an interdisciplinary background to the project, combining engineering, finance, and business strategy. He holds a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering, an MBA in International Business and Finance, and a Doctor of Business Administration with research focused on corporate finance. His professional experience spans engineering, infrastructure advisory, technology consulting, enterprise management, and investment strategy. He currently serves as Managing Director of Ghosh Group.

Over the years, Dr. Ghosh has also been featured by publications including Mint, Dainik Jagran, ABP News, Mid-Day, The Telegraph, Nationwide Awards, and NY Weekly for his work in entrepreneurship, business leadership, and startup research.

As India’s startup ecosystem continues to mature, frameworks such as Elevent Index reflect a broader movement toward data-driven and disciplined investment evaluation. By encouraging investors to assess business fundamentals alongside fundraising preparedness, the framework seeks to promote more transparent discussions between founders and investors while supporting better-informed capital allocation decisions.
