In small towns of Uttar Pradesh, finding clean, high-quality food remains a challenge, with roadside eateries frequently raising hygiene concerns.
Addressing this gap, the Adani Foundation has supported a new initiative in the Madihan area of Mirzapur district, 'Didi Cafe', which is emerging not just as a food outlet but as a strong platform for women's self-reliance.
According to the Census 2011, the female work participation rate in Mirzapur district stands at around 22.7%, indicating limited employment opportunities for women in rural areas.
In this context, the cafe has been launched with support to the 'Beti Bachao Self-Help Group', enabling women to access dignified employment and a steady source of income. The initiative is expected to benefit several families, as the additional income can be used for children's education, healthcare, and household needs.
The responsibility of running the cafe rests entirely with 10 women from the 'Beti Bachao' self-help group, supported by one male chef to ensure consistency in food quality and taste.
Key members include Rinku Devi (President), Bittan (Secretary), and Jai Lalita (Treasurer), along with Soni, Johra Begum, Najbul, Sairun, Hasina Begum, Sona Begum, and Parvati.
All the women belong to Devari Kalan village in Madihan and manage daily operations from morning till evening, including cooking, serving, maintaining cleanliness, and attending to customers. The cafe offers local snacks, sweets, as well as lunch and dinner at affordable prices.
Located in front of the Madihan Tehsil office on Uttar Pradesh State Highway-5, which connects Mirzapur to Robertsganj, the cafe is easily accessible to both locals and passersby. With a seating capacity of 35 people, it caters comfortably to families and office staff.
Regular visitors include employees of the Adani Thermal Power Plant and associated companies, tehsil staff, Community Health Centre personnel, as well as students, labourers, and the general public.
What sets 'Didi Cafe' apart is its focus on health and hygiene, with premium quality ingredients and strict cleanliness standards maintained in food preparation and service. The initiative highlights how providing opportunities and support to women can transform not only their households but also the broader community.
