A protest by factory workers in Phase 2 of Noida escalated into violence on Monday, with clashes reported between protesters and authorities in parts of the industrial belt.
The agitation, which began as a sit-in over wage-related demands, intensified as large numbers of workers gathered across multiple sectors.
The situation worsened in Sector 1, where some protesters allegedly set vehicles ablaze, leaving at least two completely destroyed. Incidents of stone-pelting were also reported, causing damage to vehicles and nearby company premises.
In Sector 62, heavy gatherings led to traffic disruptions, affecting daily movement in the area.
Police forces have been deployed in large numbers to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation. Officials said efforts are underway to restore order and assess the extent of damage.
The unrest comes despite recent discussions between the district administration and worker representatives. Authorities had assured steps to address concerns, including improved wages and working conditions.
District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Medha Roopam, stated that measures had already been announced, such as double pay for overtime, mandatory weekly rest days, and additional compensation for work on designated holidays.
The administration has also directed companies to ensure timely payment of salaries, proper issuance of payslips, and adherence to bonus regulations. A control room has been set up to handle worker grievances.
Officials have appealed for calm. They have urged workers to avoid misinformation and cooperate with authorities as efforts continue to stabilise the situation.
