A long-dark stretch of Gorai Beach in Mumbai has been illuminated following the completion of a major infrastructure effort led by Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited in partnership with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
The 2.5-kilometre shoreline in Borivali West had remained without street lighting for nearly three years, raising safety concerns and limiting public activity after sunset despite its popularity among visitors.
Officials said earlier attempts to install lighting had failed due to the difficult coastal conditions, including uneven rocky and sandy terrain and high salt content in the air, which caused rapid damage to conventional infrastructure.
To overcome these challenges, engineers developed a tailored solution designed specifically for the environment.
Around 90 lighting poles now stand on reinforced foundations, using corrosion-resistant materials and protected underground cabling systems.
Additional safety measures, such as insulated wiring and multiple grounding points, included to ensure reliability.
The design also incorporated poles of over five metres in height to provide even lighting across the uneven surface, along with a maintenance approach that avoids the need for heavy vehicles in areas lacking access roads.
Local representatives welcomed the project, noting that poor lighting had long affected both safety and evening economic activity in the area.
Residents said the upgrade will likely improve visibility, increase visitor numbers after dark and support local livelihoods.
An Adani Electricity spokesperson stated, "Gorai Beach remained unlit for several years due to the complexity of the terrain and harsh environmental conditions. Working closely with the BMC, our focus was to develop a durable and practical solution that could withstand coastal challenges."
"By leveraging innovative engineering and customised infrastructure solutions, we have successfully converted a difficult stretch into a safe and welcoming public space, reflecting our commitment to strengthening civic infrastructure and enhancing everyday life for the communities we serve," the spokesperson further noted.
