From OTT To Anti-Piracy: Kamal Haasan's Big Plan For Tamil Film Industry

Bharat Express 1 week ago

Actor-Politician Kamal Haasan has submitted a six-point proposal to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, urging the state government to introduce reforms aimed at strengthening the Tamil film industry.

The Makkal Needhi Maiam chief met the Chief Minister on Saturday and later shared details of the recommendations on social media, stating that the proposals were designed to support filmmakers, theatre owners and audiences.

One of the key suggestions was the launch of a government-supported OTT platform that would offer Tamil films, documentaries and independent cinema to viewers at affordable prices.

Haasan also requested the removal of the four per cent local body entertainment tax, saying rising production expenses and theatre operating costs had placed financial strain on the industry.

The Actor-Politician further called for tougher action against digital piracy and proposed the creation of a dedicated anti-piracy wing under the Tamil Nadu Police Cyber Crime Department to enable faster removal of pirated content online.

To help cinema halls improve earnings, Haasan suggested allowing theatres across the state to run five shows daily for all films. He also recommended introducing a compulsory eight-week gap between theatrical release and OTT streaming release for movies released in Tamil Nadu.

Another recommendation focused on introducing incentives for film production in the state.

According to Haasan, such measures could help Tamil Nadu regain its position as a major filmmaking centre while also generating employment and encouraging tourism.

MNM, an ally of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, did not contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
