On Friday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underlined the importance of international cooperation and development partnerships while addressing a programme in Paramaribo on the theme 'Partnership for Progress'.

Sharing details of the event on X, Jaishankar said strong partnerships between nations are essential to achieve meaningful progress in a challenging global environment. He thanked Suriname Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva and the Surinamese Foreign Ministry for organising the event and attending the programme.

During his address, Jaishankar spoke about India's growing role in global affairs. He also described the qualities of a reliable international partner capable of balancing national priorities with broader global responsibilities.

The Minister highlighted India's development cooperation projects, contribution to the global workforce and humanitarian assistance efforts. He also pointed to recent international initiatives as examples of the country's expanding global engagement.

According to Jaishankar, India aims to support Suriname in its future growth and strengthen bilateral ties further.

As part of his visit, the Minister also planted a sapling at India House in Suriname under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign.

Earlier during the visit, Jaishankar formally handed over a fruit-processing facility established in Paramaribo with Indian financial assistance.

India developed the facility using fruit-processing machinery supplied under a USD 1 million grant programme. The Minister had announced the programme for small and medium enterprises in 2025.

Speaking at the inauguration event, the Minister said the project reflected India's broader commitment towards supporting Suriname. He also said the initiative highlighted India's engagement with countries of the Global South.

Jaishankar added that India's philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', meaning the world is one family, reflects not only in diplomatic statements but also in practical development projects.

The Minister said India would continue to remain a dependable partner in Suriname's development journey.

Suriname Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva and Agriculture Minister Nike Noersalim were also present during the event.
