Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister.
She also reaffirmed her commitment to working closely with him to create fresh opportunities for the citizens of both countries.
PM Modi achieved the milestone after completing 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister.
He surpassed the record previously held by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and completed 12 years at the head of the Union government.
Extending her greetings, Meloni shared a message on X.
"Congratulations to Narendra Modi who today becomes the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in the history of India. It has been a pleasure to meet again in Rome in recent weeks and to launch together a Special Strategic Partnership that looks to the future to create new opportunities for our Nations and our peoples."
In May, PM Modi undertook a two-day official visit to Italy. During the visit, he held discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella.
The two leaders agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a Special Strategic Partnership. They welcomed the growing pace of high-level engagement and decided to hold annual leaders' meetings alongside regular ministerial and institutional consultations.
According to the Prime Minister's Office, both sides reviewed progress under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029. They agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, defence, security, science, technology, innovation, space, energy, artificial intelligence, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
The leaders also expressed satisfaction over expanding defence cooperation. They welcomed the Joint Declaration of Intent and an Industrial Roadmap for co-design, co-development and co-production of defence equipment.
During the visit, PM Modi presented Meloni with a packet of "Melody" toffees, reviving the popular '#Melodi' social media trend.
Meloni later shared the light-hearted moment online, highlighting the cordial rapport that continues to symbolise strengthening India-Italy relations.
