Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday, remarked that Bahujan leader Kanshi Ram could have become the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh if former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had been alive today.

He observed while speaking at a Samajik Parivartan Divas programme organised at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow to commemorate Kanshi Ram's birth anniversary.

While addressing the gathering, Rahul Gandhi remembered Kanshi Ram as a leader who dedicated his life to promoting equality and justice for marginalised sections of society.

"If the Congress had functioned effectively at that time, Kanshi Ram would not have needed to wage a separate struggle," he stated.

During the programme, attendees also adopted a proposal urging the government to award the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, to Kanshi Ram.

Rahul Gandhi criticised the present government, claiming that political influence and economic resources remain concentrated among a small group of people.

He encouraged citizens to review the representation of communities in the bureaucracy, corporate sector, and leadership of major companies, arguing that Dalits, Other Backwards Classes (OBCs), and Adivasis are underrepresented in these positions.

"In contrast, if you look at the list of MGNREGA workers, you will find these very communities in overwhelming numbers," Rahul Gandhi noted.

Gandhi also said that the Indian Constitution reflects principles shaped by thinkers such as Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar, and Gautam Buddha.

"We need to engage in politics that brings change to society. Engage in such politics that enable the inclusion of Hindustan's poor, Dalits, backward classes, and tribals in the country's power sector," reiterated.
