Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered prayers at the historic Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, as devotees chanted 'Om Namah Shivay', creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere at Indonesia's largest Hindu temple complex.
The visit highlighted the centuries-old civilisational and cultural ties shared by India and Indonesia.
Sharing a video of the prayers on social media, the Prime Minister wrote, "Om Namah Shivay at Prambanan Temple in Indonesia!"
Earlier, PM Modi also posted an aerial video of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, describing it as the 'majestic Prambanan Temple'.
During the visit, PM Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto jointly inaugurated an India-supported conservation and restoration project at the temple complex.
A day earlier, both countries exchanged a Letter of Intent for the restoration initiative following bilateral talks aimed at strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Large crowds carrying the national flags of India and Indonesia lined the streets to welcome the two leaders as they travelled to the temple.
Built in the 10th century, Prambanan is Indonesia's largest Hindu temple complex, dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva.
The UNESCO-listed site also houses temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, while its intricate Ramayana carvings reflect the deep cultural and spiritual links between India and Southeast Asia.
Addressing the Indonesian Parliament, PM Modi said India and Indonesia share a common civilisational heritage rooted in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. He also highlighted Prambanan, Borobudur, Garuda and the Bali Jatra festival as symbols of the enduring bond between the two nations.
During his visit, PM Modi also held talks with President Prabowo, addressed Parliament and met the Indian diaspora.
