Newly appointed Prayagraj Police Commissioner Piyush Mordia assumed office on Thursday after offering prayers at Shri Mankameshwar Temple on the first day of Shravan.

He performed rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva and prayed for public welfare, peace, and prosperity.

Temple Mahant Brahmachari Shridharanand Maharaj blessed him and honoured him with a ceremonial robe.

Mordia later took charge at the Police Commissioner's office, where police officers and staff welcomed him.

He signalled that strengthening law and order, controlling crime, and ensuring effective public grievance redressal would remain his foremost priorities.

Addressing his first press conference at the Police Lines auditorium, Mordia reaffirmed the police's zero-tolerance policy against crime.

He said the Commissionerate would take firm and result-oriented action against organised crime, crimes against women, cybercrime, and traffic violations.

He stressed that policing must create both security and public confidence. Police stations will ensure prompt and impartial resolution of complaints.

He also announced wider use of technology to improve transparency, accountability, and service delivery.

The Commissioner said special drives would address traffic congestion through regular reviews and timely corrective measures.

He added that the cyber police's capabilities would be strengthened while awareness campaigns would help prevent online fraud.

Senior Commissionerate officers attended the briefing and pledged coordinated efforts to maintain public safety.

Mordia, a 1998-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has served in anti-Naxal operations with the CRPF, managed law and order during the COVID-19 pandemic, and played a key role in security planning for the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh.

He previously served as SSP in Varanasi, Moradabad, Mainpuri, Bulandshahr, and Aligarh, besides holding senior positions in Lucknow, Aligarh Range and Varanasi Zone.

A Harvard Kennedy School graduate, Mordia has earned the President's Police Medal three times for his distinguished service.
