Vinesh Phogat Says She Filed Harassment Complaint Against Brij Bhushan; Raises Tournament Concerns

Bharat Express 1 week ago

Ace Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has revealed that she is one of the six women wrestlers who filed a formal sexual harassment complaint against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Speaking publicly for the first time while the matter remains under judicial consideration, Phogat said she had earlier refrained from disclosing her identity in line with Supreme Court guidelines aimed at protecting the dignity of victims. She, however, chose to speak now, citing prevailing circumstances.

Vinesh Phogat confirmed that six wrestlers have already recorded their testimonies in court and that the legal proceedings are ongoing. She also expressed serious concerns about the upcoming National Open Ranking Tournament, which the Wrestling Federation of India will organise from May 12 to 14 in Gonda, a region considered a stronghold of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Vinesh Phogat questioned the fairness and transparency of the competition, alleging that officiating, scoring, and other processes could be influenced. She also raised doubts over the integrity of key procedures such as weigh-ins, suggesting that outcomes may not accurately reflect athletes' efforts.

Phogat further alleged that despite Brij Bhushan's formal removal as WFI president, he continues to exert influence over the federation, while the Sports Ministry has not intervened effectively.

Announcing her intention to participate in the tournament, Vinesh Phogat stated that her team and supporters would be present and warned that any untoward incident would hold the government accountable.
