Your Phone Buzzed With A Disaster Warning - What Just Happened?

Your Phone Buzzed With A Disaster Warning - What Just Happened?

Bharat Express 2 weeks ago

On Saturday, the government carried out a countrywide test of a mobile-based emergency warning system designed to improve public safety during natural and man-made disasters.

The system, known as 'Cell Broadcast Alert', is currently undergoing evaluation across India. The National Disaster Management Authority is sending test notifications to mobile users for this purpose.

The alert informed recipients that the message was part of a trial and required no action.

When delivered, the notification appeared as a flashing message accompanied by a loud alert tone on users' phones, ensuring it was immediately noticeable.

The alerts were issued through the Integrated Alert System, SACHET, developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics. The platform operates using the globally recognised Common Alerting Protocol recommended by the International Telecommunication Union.

Officials said the system is intended to provide timely warnings for events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, lightning strikes and industrial emergencies, including gas leaks and chemical incidents. Messages are sent directly to mobile devices within affected areas.

Although similar trials have been conducted earlier, the current exercise is part of a broader effort. It aims to evaluate the system's effectiveness and reliability before full nationwide implementation.

The alerts were received only on devices with the test broadcast feature enabled.

Users have the option to manage these alerts through their phone settings under emergency notification controls.

Following the testing phase, authorities plan to roll out the system across the country. It will enable real-time alerts in multiple Indian languages to reach users on all mobile networks.
