The courage and determination of the Indian Air Force during the Kargil War will soon be brought to audiences on OTT with Operation Safed Sagar, premiering on Netflix on August 7. Directed by Oni Sen, the series stars Jimmy Shergill, Siddharth, Abhay Verma, Mihir Ahuja, and several other talented actors in key roles.

Recently, Jimmy Shergill, Siddharth, and producer Sanjay Routray opened up about the making of the series and their experiences. Here's what they had to say.

The trailer reveals many lesser-known aspects of the Kargil War. Which part of the story touched you the most?

Jimmy Shergill: The first impact of any film or series is always on the actors because we are the first ones to read the script. This script introduced us to several facts we didn't know before. Most of us have always viewed the Kargil War from the Army's perspective, but very few people know how crucial the Indian Air Force's role was. The series also highlights the preparations before the war and many untold incidents. I believe audiences will discover an important chapter of history that hasn't been explored on such a large scale before.

What was your first thought when you joined Operation Safed Sagar? Tell us about your character.

Siddharth: For me, this is much more than just another project-it is one of the greatest honours of my career. I even hesitate to call it just a "character" because I am portraying a real-life hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. My goal wasn't simply to wear the uniform or look like a pilot but to understand his personality, emotions, and mindset with complete honesty. That responsibility is immense for any actor.

What was your first reaction when you were offered Operation Safed Sagar?

Sanjay Routray: When we read the nearly 200-page document, we immediately knew this story had to be told. The world of fighter jets and the Indian Air Force is fascinating, and I felt it deserved to reach audiences on a grand scale. Later, Netflix came on board, which gave us the confidence to make the series with the scale and quality it truly deserved.

Was there any memorable experience working with the younger cast?

Jimmy Shergill: It was wonderful. It also reminded me of my early days because I went through similar training when I started my career. Every young actor on the show is incredibly talented and dedicated. The atmosphere on set was always positive. When the entire team works with the same vision, it reflects on screen. I'm confident the audience will remember every character in this series.

Which moment or aspect of the story left the deepest impact on you?

Siddharth: The moment I read the script, I realized this wasn't just another patriotic project. Today, there are many ways of portraying patriotism, but this story never feels forced. It honestly and respectfully presents a part of the Kargil War that very few people know about. The entire team's only objective was to tell this story with sincerity, and that's what impressed me the most.

How challenging was it to bring together such a large ensemble cast?

Sanjay Routray: The credit goes entirely to Kushal, Abhijeet, and director Oni Sen. They had complete clarity about the casting from the very beginning. Every actor was chosen with a specific role in mind, and the best part was that almost everyone agreed to join the project soon after hearing the story.

What was the biggest responsibility and challenge in portraying Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja?

Siddharth: Playing a real-life hero comes with enormous responsibility. It's not just about acting-you have to understand the person's personality, mindset, and emotions. Every day on this project was a learning experience for me. I'm happy that through this series, a new generation will get to know the story of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, a true national hero.

What is the biggest lesson you hope the younger generation takes away from Operation Safed Sagar?

Jimmy Shergill: My message is very simple. If you have the passion to serve the nation and believe you are capable of doing so, then you should consider joining the Indian Armed Forces. It is not just a career but a life filled with discipline, honour, and responsibility. During the shoot, we got the opportunity to closely observe the Indian Air Force, and that's when we truly realized who our real heroes are. I hope that after watching Operation Safed Sagar, young people will learn more about these heroes and feel inspired by them.
