The National School of Drama's Summer Theatre Festival Brings Acclaimed Plays to Delhi Stage

Delhi is currently completely absorbed in the world of theatre. The 'Summer Theatre Festival' organized by the National School of Drama (NSD) has created tremendous excitement among art lovers.

Organized by NSD's Repertory Company, the 38-day festival will run from May 8 to June 14. During this period, a total of 26 performances of 10 popular plays will be staged. These productions include classical, social, and contemporary themes, offering audiences a variety of theatrical experiences.

NSD Director Speaks

NSD Director Chittaranjan Tripathy said that earlier the festival used to be limited to one month and was later shortened to just a few days. However, it has now been expanded to 38 days.

Festival Opens with Aks Tamasha

The festival began on Friday, May 8, with the play Aks Tamasha. The production is based on the famous play Sirisampige by Jnanpith award-winning writer Chandrashekhar Kambar. Its Hindi adaptation has been done by veteran theatre personality and former NSD director Ram Gopal Bajaj, while it has been directed by Bhanu Bharti.

The play unfolds themes of illusion, truth, and human relationships in the style of a folk tale. Through twin characters, it also incorporates elements of satire and humor.

Acclaimed Plays to be Staged

In the coming days, audiences will get to enjoy several well-known productions, including Taj Mahal Ka Tender, Babuji, Tamas, Band Gali Ka Aakhri Makaan, Andha Yug, Aadhe Adhure, Bayen, Samudra Manthan, and Mai Ri Main Kaase Kahoon. These plays explore diverse themes of literature, society, history, and human emotions.

Tamas and Taj Mahal Ka Tender Are Major Attractions

Based on the novel by celebrated writer Bhisham Sahni, Tamas brings the tragedy of Partition alive on stage. It has been directed by Chittaranjan Tripathy, who has previously staged several successful productions of the play.

Meanwhile, Taj Mahal Ka Tender continues to be popular among audiences for its satirical style and sharp social commentary. It has been written by Ajay Shukla.

Mai Ri Main Kaase Kahoon and Babuji

The play Mai Ri Main Kaase Kahoon, based on the famous story Duvidha by Vijaydan Detha, is another major attraction of the festival. The story has previously inspired films such as Duvidha and Paheli.

On the other hand, the play Babuji, directed by Rajesh Singh, is based on a story by Hindi writer Mithileshwar. The play delivers a powerful message about family, relationships, and patriarchal thinking, reflecting the realities of society.

The festival will conclude on June 14 with the play Samudra Manthan. This production will present a modern interpretation of a mythological tale. Besides Delhi, performances of these plays will also be organized in Jaipur, Shimla, Mandi, and Kullu.
