Indian Energy Exchange reported a total electricity traded volume of 12,550 million units (MU) in February 2026, registering a 30.4% increase year-on-year , according to the company's monthly update.
The exchange also recorded strong activity in the renewable segment, with 18.86 lakh Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) traded during the month, marking a 15.2% rise compared to February 2025.
Government data released in February 2026 showed that India's total energy consumption reached 133 billion units (BU), reflecting a 1.9% increase year-on-year. Despite higher electricity consumption, prices on power exchanges declined compared with the previous year due to higher supply liquidity available on exchange platforms.
The Market Clearing Price in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) stood at ₹3.58 per unit in February 2026, which was 18.3% lower year-on-year. Similarly, the Real-Time Market (RTM) recorded an average price of ₹3.59 per unit, down 18.7% from the same period last year.
Lower prices on the exchange provided an opportunity for power distribution companies (Discoms) and commercial and industrial consumers to meet electricity demand at competitive rates by procuring power through exchange platforms instead of relying on costlier sources.
