Indian equity markets will remain closed on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, on account of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti, with no trading across the equity, derivatives, and Securities Lending and Borrowing segments on BSE and NSE. Regular trading will resume on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
For commodity market participants, the picture is different in the second half of the day. The Multi Commodity Exchange will be closed for its morning session running from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm but will open for its evening session from 5:00 pm to 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm depending on the commodity. This means traders in crude oil, gold, silver, copper, natural gas, and other MCX-listed commodities will have access to the market in the evening hours - a particularly significant window given the extreme volatility in global commodity markets driven by the Iran war, the Hormuz crisis, and Monday's developments including Iran's declaration of a permanent Hormuz control mechanism and the collapse of the US-Iran ceasefire framework.
The MCX evening session's relevance is amplified on a holiday when equity markets are shut. Global events will continue to unfold through Tuesday - the Washington talks between Israel and Lebanon are scheduled, Lavrov's meetings with Wang Yi in Beijing are underway, and US markets will be open and pricing in any developments from the Middle East. MCX's evening session gives Indian commodity traders a window to react to those developments in real time rather than waiting until Wednesday morning, making the 5 pm opening particularly important for anyone with exposure to energy commodities whose prices are directly linked to the Hormuz situation.
The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange will remain shut for both sessions on Tuesday, with no trading in agricultural commodities on NCDEX for the full day.
The next scheduled market holiday after Tuesday is May 1, 2026, for Maharashtra Day - meaning markets will trade continuously from Wednesday April 15 through April 30 before the next break.
Investors and traders should note that while MCX's evening session provides commodity market access, all equity portfolio decisions, order placements, and derivative positions on BSE and NSE will need to wait until Wednesday's opening. Settlement obligations due on Tuesday will follow the exchange's holiday settlement guidelines.
