Rajasthan Royals have handed a debut to Lhuan-dre Pretorius in their IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, offering the young wicketkeeper-batter an early test on a big stage.
Replacement signing gets his chance
Pretorius was signed ahead of the 2025 season as a replacement for Nitish Rana, who was ruled out with injury. The deal, worth INR 30 lakh, brought in a 19-year-old with limited senior exposure but strong youth credentials. This will be his second appearance in the IPL. He had earlier featured as an Impact Player against Chennai Super Kings last season but did not get a chance to bat.
A left-handed top-order batter and wicketkeeper, Pretorius had built his reputation through the Under-19 circuit and performances in South Africa's domestic T20 leagues. Before joining RR, he had scored 911 runs in 33 T20 matches, with a highest score of 97.
Big stage, early pressure
Making an IPL debut is never straightforward, more so in a high-profile league with packed crowds and constant scrutiny. For a 20-year-old, the jump is steep.
How quickly can he adjust to the pace and pressure? And will RR give him a longer run or treat this as a one-off opportunity?
Royals look to invest in youth
Rajasthan Royals have often backed young players, and this move fits that approach. With the tournament still in its early phase, giving exposure now could help later.
For Pretorius, this is more than just a debut. It is a chance to show he belongs at this level.
