Key additions include large crude distillation units with a combined capacity of roughly 225,000 bpd, vacuum distillation units capable of processing around 100,000 bpd, and a 65,000 bpd residue hydrocracking unit, one of the largest of its kind globally. These upgrades allow the refinery to convert heavier crude residues into refined fuels such as diesel and jet fuel.

Role in Bahrain's economy

The refinery plays a crucial role in Bahrain's economy, supporting the country's long-term economic diversification plans under Vision 2030. The oil and energy sector contributes a significant share to Bahrain's GDP, and the refinery serves as the backbone of the country's downstream energy industry.

Since Bahrain does not have any other major refining facility, the Sitra refinery is essential for both domestic fuel production and export revenues. Any disruption to operations at the site could have a direct impact on the country's energy supply and trade.

Global and regional importance
