SJVN's Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) has achieved a historic milestone of 150 billion units (BU) of cumulative power generation since its commissioning in May 2004. The achievement underscores the station's consistent operational reliability and its critical role in strengthening India's northern power grid with clean energy.
Bhupender Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director of SJVN, highlighted the station's exceptional performance benchmarks. NJHPS recorded its highest-ever annual generation of 7,610.257 million units in FY 2011-12, followed by a record monthly generation of 1,222.170 million units in July 2024. The station achieved its highest-ever daily generation of 39.572 million units on 13 August 2024, demonstrating its capacity to optimally harness favourable hydrological conditions.
The 150 BU milestone carries significant environmental value, representing displacement of fossil-fuel-based generation and consequent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. NJHPS continues to benefit from systematic modernisation, digital monitoring, and rigorous maintenance practices. Beyond power generation, the project has contributed to regional socio-economic development through employment creation and infrastructure growth, reinforcing hydropower's strategic importance in India's renewable energy portfolio.
